Unpaginated perhaps a hundred pages coated paperstock throughout with captioned b&w photography and a splendid colorized centerfold panorama. Softbound in 9x12 inch grey Yapp-edged wraps decorated in blue and brown with titling gilt externally somewhat edgeworn with tiny tears at head tail and foredge. Front and back covers are reflected from textblock revealing rusted staples in three places the rust has seeped thru wraps and is visible in small stains. The color panorama is in perfect shape having been "stubbed in" thus escaping the staples. Title page saving stapled areas and a faint corner-tip erasure and all leaves are near-fine plates are clear and free of any marks a good to very good copy. Robert A. Drake District Passenger Agent 937 State Street Santa Barbara California.†CONDITION: Some very small losses at edge of image in lower left corner very good overall. <p>A large and very appealing advertising photograph of Santa Barbara Beach and vicinity issued by the Southern Pacific Railway.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>This turn of the century photo likely taken on the weekend captures the lively scene at Plaza Del Mar built in the 1890s showing men women and children sitting on benches or strolling about. Many of the women wear white dresses and hats and a few hold parasols. Several boys in bathing suits sit in the sand in the lower right foreground. Los Baños del Mar opened 1901 shown here with picnic tables on the roof appears just to the left of the crowd. At center-left a Japanese tea garden and a sign identifying it as such can be seen on the roof of a building and to its right is a storefront with a sign reading “Boulevard Card Store.†Cabrillo Boulevard with its palm tree-lined promenade stretches along the beach at center right. Hotel Potter appears in the distance on the left and foothills and mountains loom in the background.</p> <br /> <br /> <p>The phrase “Road of a Thousand Wonders†which is included in the photo’s title was used by the Southern Pacific Co. from the 1900s to at least the 1920s. One of the great American railroad systems the Southern Pacific was established by the “big four†of western railroad building: Collis Huntington Leland Stanford Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker. After completing the Central Pacific line from California to Utah in 1869 the four partners started the Southern Pacific as a branch line into southern California. It was incorporated in 1884 and the railroads making up the Central Pacific system were leased to the Southern Pacific Co. the following year. Griffin the land commissioner or J.L. Doupe the assistant land commissioner. A large and informative map of two Canadian provinces which experienced development at the hands of railroad tycoons and the descendants of European colonists. A fascinating look at Canada's political and railroad history. With three vertical folds and five horizontal folds the map has about three small splits all at the folds but is holding up quite well. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a most captivating expedition account of the author's adventurous explorations of the islands of the Louisiade and D'Entrecasteaux Archipelagoes, inhabited by head-hunters and cannibals, included in the possession of British New Guinea. Accompanied by a charming fold-out colour map, showing Thomson's travel routes. Sir Basil Home Thomson was British colonial administrator in Fiji, Tonga and New Guinea between the years 1883 and 1893. Thomson begins his expedition from Port Moresby, traversing seventy miles on horseback to reach the coastal villages of Motu, Saroa, and Loyalupu tribes. Here he makes interesting remarks on the tribal trades, native canoes, polygamy, intertribal feuds, head-hunting practices, superstitions and witchcrafts, and common diseases. Then he proceeds towards Sudest Island, the largest of the Louisiades, here he finds some 400 miners prospecting for gold. The island was very sparsely inhabited, and the native have for years been the prey of the head-hunting parties from Brooker Island. From Sudest Island, accompanied by twenty miner, he sails towards the mysterious and dangerous Rossel Island, where its unsurveyed barrier reefs have caused so many shipwrecks. After landing on the island the expedition party proceeds towards Dixon Bay, then passes through the treacherous forest where they visit several villages, some deserted and some inhabited by cannibals and headhunters, which contained human skulls and bones , with huts filled with hunting spears, arrows, and much more. Afterwards he visits the island of Joannet, and the unexplored and densely populated island of St. Aignan (Misima), with about thirty villages, inhabited by industrious and skilful cultivators as well as head-hunters. Anchors on the north-east Point of Normanby Island, the most easterly of the D'Entrecasteaux Group, also densely populated, with remarkably clean villages. Here he sees a species of the Birds of Paradise and collects some species of Orchids. He also explores Ferguson Island, the largest of the D'Entrecasteaux - where he visited Kilkerran and Maybole mountain rangers - Goulvain and Welle Islands, and Goodenough Island.‎

This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. This is a most amazing and compelling account of a fearless, treacherous, and seemingly unreasonably optimistic Pacific Ocean voyage of 101 days on a most precarious raft. Guided by the early Spanish records, supplemented by native Ecuadorian advice, the expedition members with Herman Watzinger as their architect, built a 40-foot replica of the old balsa raft, intended for the crossing of the magnificent Pacific Ocean, using balsa logs from the Ecuadorian jungle lashed together side by side with hemp rode, absolutely no metal fixings nor a single nail, and complete with a small thatched bamboo hut and two mangroves sails! The seaworthiness of the seemingly clumsy raft, which held Heyerdahl and five companions for a 4,300-mile voyage to the Polynesian islands, surpassed the boldest expectations. Upon their inconcievable return, Heyerdahl proudly reports that the buoyant logs rode the crest of breaking seas like rock. The use of rope instead of nails or pegs permitted independent movement between the separate pieces of wood and bamboo, and gave the craft an amazing toughness and resiliency at sea and on the reef. Whether the South Pacific water-span was ever bridged by preshistoric craft is a question by no means new to anthropology. The Polynesian race, its origin and its migrations have been the subject of more attention among scientists than any other living branch of the human family. Heyerdahl’s theory was that the original Polynesians had come by sea from South America, on rafts such as the one he and his companions built. The first voyage ended in failure after 47 days. The second voyage of 4300 miles and 101 days facing dangerous storms and all the elements of the sea, did in fact establish the feasability of his claim. They set out from Callao in Peru and ended with the wreck of the Kon-Tiki on a coral reef off Raroia in the Tuamoto Archipelago, part of French Polynesia. From the actual building of the raft to their crash landing on the island, the Kon-Tiki expedition has been hailed as one of the great scientific as well as maritime feats of all time! Kon-Tiki was the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition. It was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. Kon-Tiki is also the name of the popular book that Heyerdahl wrote about his adventures. The book was a best-seller, and a documentary motion picture of the expedition won an Academy Award in 1951.‎
