When nothing had been heard from Burke by 1861, four relief expeditions were organized, this one by Landsborough, this one discovering suitable land for settlement in Queensland. This work, based on Landsborough's log book, describes the expedition with accurate observations. Mueller's description of plants found in the Gulf of Carpentaria is the first such listing. Il 15 gennaio del 1790, dopo aver navigato per mesi nei mari del Sud, Fletcher Christian e otto ammutinati del vascello Bounty, in fuga dalla Royal Navy, approdano su un'isola deserta nel mezzo dell'Oceano Pacifico: Pitcairn. Con loro, a bordo, ci sono dodici donne e sei uomini originari di Tahiti e di altre isole. L'insolito gruppo di fuggiaschi si stabilisce sull'isola e fa perdere le proprie tracce per quasi vent'anni. I primi a rientrare in contatto con loro saranno, nel 1808, gli uomini di una baleniera americana di passaggio nell'isola: il capitano della nave rimarrà meravigliato dall'armonia che regna in quella minuscola, sperduta e bizzarra società. La realtà, però, è più complessa delle apparenze: dei quindici uomini sbarcati originariamente sull'isola, ne è rimasto vivo soltanto uno. Le donne sopravvissute sono nove, alle quali si aggiungono gli oltre venti bambini nati nel frattempo. E, soprattutto, dei quattordici uomini morti durante quei diciotto anni, tredici sono stati assassinati. Che cosa è successo? Cosa ha scatenato questa feroce ondata di violenza all'interno di una piccola comunità in fuga dal mondo, che si era rifugiata in un luogo remoto per iniziare una nuova vita? Attingendo con rigore alle scarse fonti dirette, e confrontando gli studi storici con il mito hollywoodiano, questo libro ricostruisce il percorso di un gruppo di individui che, in cerca di una nuova via, mossi dalla volontà di creare un diverso modello di società, si ritrovarono a vivere un incubo.
