‎NORTH OF MONTANA REVIEW COPY‎

‎N.Y.: Alfred A Knopf Inc: A Borzoi Book 1994. First Edition so stated. . Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. Review Copy. Los Angeles. A MACAVITY AWARD NOMINEE for Best First Novel. "In a stunningly assured debut Smith has produced a crime thriller distinguished by an unflagging pace authoritative use of detail and an appealing heroine. In vigorous literate prose Smith delivers characters of depth and dimension who inhabit the wildly diverse worlds of Southern California each rendered with a cinematic eye. Her protagonist is Ana Grey an ambitious brash young FBI agent. With seven years in the L.A. field office and a recent "perfect bust" of a bank robber Ana is ready to move up. A resentful superior stands in the way however and instead of getting transferred Ana is assigned to a high-profile case involving a megawatt movie star of a certain age who has brought charges against a local doctor for addicting her to drugs. At the same time Ana receives a phone call asking her to help the two young children of a recent street-shooting victim in Santa Monica--an immigrant from El Salvador who told friends that Ana was her cousin. Ana insists it's a hoax: abandoned as an infant by her father a migrant worker from Mexico she was raised by her mother now deceased and her beloved grandfather a retired Santa Monica cop. Then Ana learns that the Salvadoran woman had worked for the physician charged in the drug case and finds herself tangled in events that lace together both personal and professional aspects of her life and trigger a troubling series of forgotten memories of her childhood. Moving through an array of settings--L.A.'s crowded Latino section El Piojilla; the blue-collar Santa Monica neighborhood of her youth; the modern elegance of the "overbuilt upscale enclave" known as "north of Montana"--Ana grapples with more death Hollywood politics personal betrayal and her own seething desires. Wisely leaving some ends untied Smith resolves the central themes of this seamless narrative in this smashing story." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Review Copy. ‎The Sun for a Hat‎

‎365 pages. A public health inspector spends twenty-five frustrating years trying to be of service to his community (Victoria, British Columbia). At fifty he resigns and goes in search of a more satisfying life. He finds it in tropical Northern Queensland. This is his story. It is a novel and an anthology. Essays, verses, short fiction, travel, observations, character sketches. It is the compellingly written, informative, enlightening, thought-provoking, always entertaining experience of a man with intelligence, wit, and humour. The reader will find that she/he is seeing himself and his own community, because this book is not just about a small Canadian city or one corner of the sunny South Pacific. Nor is it just about one man's escape from a frustrating job. It is a forthright assessment of a society in trouble by a man who has a wider view because he deliberately stepped outside. ‎Volcanic Eruption at Tarawera, New Zealand: Resulting Topographical Changes in the District. [With Map]‎

‎3 pages. Plus a fold-out colour map measuring approximately 7 x 7.5 inches (18 x 19cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A brief account accompanied by an an incredible early colour map of the deadly volcanic explosions in the Tarawera districts of New Zealand. Tarawera Mountain is a volcanic peak, situated on the North Island, New Zealand, in Rotorua. Its eruption in 1886 destroyed villages and unique silica terraces, transformed local terrain, and temporarily drained Lake Rotomahana. June 10th 1886, shortly after midnight, earthquakes are felt in Te Wairoa and Rotorua. The area is renowned for tremors and no-one is too worried. Residents sleep blissfully unaware of the impending danger. Around 1:30am there is a violent earthquake followed by the sound of an explosion. Sleepy residents look in terror across the lake to see Tarawera's Wahanga dome, exploding into life. The eruption cloud was about 9.5 km high and easily visible, being lit up by the mountain's continuing eruption and accompanying lightning storm. For half an hour, the spell bound residents stare in awe at the scene before them, a few sense the danger and head toward the safety of nearby Rotorua. At 2.00am, there is a second explosion as the Ruawahia peak, and then the Tarawera peak erupt with all the fury that mother nature can muster. So loud was the second explosion, that it was heard in Christchurch over 800 kilometres south. In Wellington 400km south, locals believed that Russians were invading New Zealand by way of bombing. The amazing lightning storm above the second Tarawera eruption was visible as lights in the sky from New Zealand's South Island. Eyewitnesses near the mountain reported that Mount Tarawera had split open, and that a huge column of fire could be seen shooting up into the air and forming a black cloud of smoke and ash. In fact, a 17km fissure had been created down the length of the Tarawera complex. Near Rotorua, New Zealand: At 2:00am 10 June 1886, terrified families awoke to a rumbling giant, the noise was heard over 500 kilometres away. The mountain, lit by a tremendous display of lightning, rained ash upon her neighbours and began the deadly renovation of her buried landscape. This spectacular map provides the visual account of Mount Tarawera, the volcano that stole more than life.‎

Platt a shadowy figure with connections to the world of intelligence offers Jason a paying job keeping an eye on a mutual friend Paul Reno who is hanging with a new crowd "a little seedier and a little more serious than his usual" and who gets involved in software theft and a possible homicide. Paul is a royal pain rude and condescending to Jason and his friendsRobert a very tall actor and Martin "an occasional graphic artist" and aspiring knife fighter. One problem readers will have is understanding why someone doesn't punch Paul out sooner than it happens. Other readers may take issue with Snyder's reliance on scenes involving clunky old cars a device that's refreshing for only the first few turns. Most of these objections will be made between bouts of laughter however as Snyder delivers dialogue that is often strikingly original and adroitly paced. His edgy appealing characters and deft evocations of seedy Southern California urban life make return visits with Keltner and his cohorts a welcome prospect. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. ‎SONNERAT (Pierre);‎

‎Edition originale (Nissen, IVB, 885 - Pritzel, 8773 - Ronsil 2802).
