WASHINGTON SEATTLE 1909 ALASKA YUKON PACIFIC EXPOSITION
One Hundred and Fifty Latest Views of the A. Y. P. Exposition and Puget Sound Country.
Seattle.: Robert A. Reid. 1909. An unpaginated booklet approximately 5 x 6.75 inches in red card wraps; scuff to upper right corner of front cover. Minor paper loss on last page at gutter of bottom edge of page. In addition to the 150 "Official Exposition Photographs" there are 33 additional pages of "Scenery About Puget Sound." The booklet offers copious information regarding the major exhibits artwork edifices ethnic curiosities and bizarre "entertainments" that captivated the crowds in 1909. In the Preface to the booklet of Official Photographs one of the objectives of the Exposition's organizers is developed: "The Exposition invites the people of the old crowded sections of the world to these new and developing fields by setting forth their opportunities." Further "Within the exhibit are gathered specimens of nature's products and man's handiwork from sources both remote and at hand which form an ever increasing fund of knowledge the more fascinating the more seen and studied." The exposition was held on the forested campus of the fledgling University of Washington with the state legislature providing important funding with the proviso that four permanent buildings would remain at the close of the Exposition to serve the University. The Olmsted Brothers of Brookline MA--landscape designers for major city parks and university campuses--were responsible for the configuration and landscaping of the grounds. The Exposition proved a great success. The booklet captures the dynamic atmosphere of the Exposition and the extraordinary variety of exhibits and entertainments. An uncommon item in very good condition. . Robert A. Reid. paperback
