‎Belle planche dessinée d'après nature et gravée à l'aquatinte par William Hodges, issue du rare ouvrage Select views in India, publié entre 1785 et 1788. La vue figure les pagodes du village de Deogarh situé dans l'Uttar Pradesh au nord de l'Inde. En 1772, William Hodges accompagna le capitaine Cook en qualité de dessinateur, et fournit des illustrations pour la relation de son second voyage. Après avoir achevé cet ouvrage, il se rendit en Inde où il réalisa une grande fortune, grâce au patronage de Warren Hastings. Bel exemplaire finement colorié à l'époque. Rare exemplaire aquarellé à l'époque, les exemplaires en noir et blanc étant beaucoup plus communs.‎

‎14 belles planches en couleurs par Hodges, dont 13 sur double page et une repliée. William Hodges (1744-1797), peintre anglais, participa notamment à la deuxième expédition du capitaine James Cook, qu'il a fait connaitre en partie par la qualité de ses dessins. Hodges fut également le premier peintre paysagiste anglais à se rendre en Inde où il demeurera 6 ans (1778-1784). Sans se défaire totalement d'un académisme anglais, il donnera de l'Inde la vision idyllique d'une nouvelle Arcadie, jouant sur des contrastes parfois violents entre ombres et lumières. Il a pourtant le mérite de représenter des scènes en respectant scrupuleusement le détail des costumes, ce qui est assez étonnant pour un peintre occidental du XVIIIe siècle. Il a su ainsi montrer une Inde qui échappe aux fantasmes qui abondaient dans l'Occident de l'époque. Son voyage, en dépit de lacunes inévitables, demeure cependant important et toujours en partie d'actualité.‎
