‎* Einzige Ausgabe. Sehr selten ! ----- Amaru oder auch Amaruka, (ca. 6.?8. Jahrhundert) ist ein indischer Dichter und gilt neben Kalidasa und Bhartrihari als Hauptvertreter der indischen Sanskrit-Dichtung und großer Meister der erotischen Poesie. Über sein Leben existieren kaum gesicherte Fakten, der Großteil sind legendenhafte Überlieferungen. Vermutlich war er ein kaschmirischer König, es heißt aber in Legenden, dass die Gedichte eigentlich von dem Philosophen Sankara stammten, der sich im Text als Amaru nur ausgibt, um dessen Frau, die Königin, als seine Geliebte zu besingen. Anhand der Texte lässt sich allerdings definitiv sagen, dass Amaru zur höchsten Gesellschaftsklasse seiner Zeit gehört haben muss. Werk: Indische Illustration zu Vers 76 des Amarusataka aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert. Amaru bedient sich in seinem einzigen Werk, der Sammlung Amarusataka (deutsch: Die hundert Strophen Amarus) der zu dieser Zeit bereits sehr alten Form der poetischen Miniatur, bekannt als muktaka oder gatha, in denen er isolierte Bilder meist explizit hetero- wie homosexuellen erotischen Charakters dem Leser intensiv erlebbar macht. In einer Legende wird Amaru als die einhundertunderste Reinkarnation einer Seele bezeichnet, die vorher einhundert mal in Frauenkörpern inkarniert gewesen sei. Trotz der ?kleinen Form?, von der Amaru Gebrauch macht und dem, nach heutigem, westlichen Verständnis, schlichten Thema, verwendet er erhebliche gestalterische Energie auf die Epigramme, benutzt ?Hyperbeln, Metaphern, Wortspiele etc., also stilistische Figuren, ebenso jedoch die Unwägbarkeiten der Sprache, die Gefühle, Stimmungen, ja letztlich einen überpersönlichen, göttlichen Genuss im Hörer erzeugen können. Auch das verfeinerte Gedicht, das bestimmten Publikumserwartungen entsprechen muss, ist also immer mehr, als ein kompliziertes Konglomerat von stilistisch-rhetorischen Formeln. Das eigentlich Erotische der indischen Liebeslyrik entsteht zwischen den geläufigen Bildern und Satzwendungen und einer Inspiration, die, synästhetisch gesteigert, die Atmosphäre des Verlangens, der Erregung und Stillung sinnlich-geistiger Bedürfnisse, gleichsam unmittelbar vernehmbar macht.? Westliche Rezeption: Die erste Übersetzung des Amarusataka in eine westliche Sprache stammte von einem der Begründer der Indologie, dem Franzosen Antoine-Léonard de Chézy. Diese Übersetzung erschien 1831 in Paris, allerdings aufgrund des erotischen Inhaltes unter Pseudonym. Im selben Jahr folgten ebenfalls Teile des Werkes in Wendts Musenalmanach als ?Sanskritische Liebesliedchen Amarusatakam?, übersetzt von Friedrich Rückert. Die vollständige Fassung der Übersetzung des Amarusataka von Rückert erschien erst 1925 in Hannover in der Orient-Buchhandlung Heinz Lafaire, herausgegeben von Johannes Nobel nach der Handschrift der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek (seither nicht neu aufgelegt). Bereits 1913 hatte der deutsche Schriftsteller Hans Bethge in seiner berühmten Reihe von Nachdichtungen orientalischer Lyrik auch Texte Amarus vorgelegt. 1937/38 vertonte der österreichische Komponist Alexander Zemlinsky noch Amarus Gedicht Die Verschmähte. Der moderne Referenz-Text ist die zweisprachige Motilal-Banarsidass-Ausgabe von 1984 mit einer englischen Übersetzung von Martha Ann Selby. (Quelle Wikipedia)‎

‎Undated but after 1895 and probably written early in 1922. On letterhead of The Priory Reigate. See his long and sympathetic entry by David Gilmour in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Curzon acquired the Priory at Reigate after his marriage in 1895 and the letter probably dates from around March to July 1922 when according to the Oxford DNB ‘he was laid low by a combination of phlebitis thrombosis and lymphangitis which kept him out of action for five months’. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. Written in pencil. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with slight spotting at foot of first page. One central fold for postage. Addressed to ‘Dear Sir’ though the recpient is clearly the husband of the ‘Mrs. Campbell’ referred to at the end of the letter and with large bold signature at bottom right of final page. The letter begins: ‘Dear Sir / Had you given me earlier intimation I would have spared you the trouble of calling. I regret to say that I am ill in bed and unable to see any visitors. Moreover in any case it would be impossible for me to accede to your request since I do not wish to attend any meetings or to take any part in public affairs in the forthcoming summer . and have been compelled to refuse many Scores of invitations in consequence.’ He regrets the trouble to which ‘Mrs Campbell’ and the recipient have been put and concludes by thanking ‘your Committees for the honour that they proposed to confer upon me’. Addressed to ‘The Honble. George Elliott’ with salutation to ‘My dear Elliott’. As he does not know where Elliott’s sister Lady Dunfermline is ‘residing at this moment’ he is placing in Elliott’s hands ‘for transmission’ a letter from the wife of the Turkish ambassador at the Hague. He expresses to Elliott’s family his sympathy at the loss of their father. ‘I can never forget the kindness which he shewed me when I was unequally associated with him in his duties in Italy. He continued the same goodness and partiality to me afterwards.’ Added to Napier’s ‘personal attachment’ is ‘the highest appreciation of his manly unaffected sincere character and of his great and useful capacity’. He is sure ‘there never was a better father and never one more loved’. He urges Elliott to consider that his ‘distress must be tempered by the reflection that his disorder was incurable and that his life could only be prolonged amidst suffering and infirmity’. He considers that there is ‘no family more united by affection’ than Elliott’s. He concludes in the hope that they ‘may be preserved to each other and see good days and happy homes and that wherever you go you may be gathered to the banks of the Teviot at last’. 8 August 1859.
