En 1899-1900, Loti en "mission officielle" parcourt une grande partie de l’Inde. Suivant un itinéraire délirant, il explore d’abord l’Inde du Sud qu’il nomme "l’Inde des palmes, avant de mettre le cap plein nord vers le Rajasthan, "l’Inde affamée", et de poursuivre ensuite son périple vers Madras et Delhi. Dans L’Inde (sans les Anglais), Loti, rêveur paradoxal, va se perdre dans la moiteur tropicale de l’Inde du Sud, partir à la découverte des spiritualités brahmaniques, admirer les spectacles des bayadères, pour clore son périple auprès de vieux sages, sur le Gange, dans la ville sacrée de Bénarès, terme symbolique de cette odyssée." He is also pleased to learn that Lee has been able to identify the print which his father sent Lee of his bookplate as the work of George Taylor Friend 'which I am sure he would have been very pleased to know'. Lee's research 'must produced quite a few headaches but with very interesting results'. (mm. 256x183), mz. pergamena, tagli marmorizz., pp. XX,495, tit. in rosso e nero al frontespizio con vignetta alle armi di Benedetto XIII cui è dedicata l’opera, ornato da iniziali e fregi calcografici, con marca tipografica al colophon inc. in rame da Carlo Gregori; il volume è arricchito da 2 tavole f.t. inc. in rame, in coloritura coeva, con più figure: una con “segni portati in fronte dagli Indiani”, l’altra con “segni permessi da’ Missionari”. L’Autore difende il decreto di Tournon nella controversia sui riti malabarici (con questo nome sono designati taluni accomodamenti e concessioni a costumi e idee locali che, per facilitare l’opera missionaria, furono adottati dai Gesuiti). Essendosi infatti riaccesa la controversia in India, a Pondichéry, dove l’opera missionaria tra gli indigeni era stata affidata ai Gesuiti togliendola ai Cappuccini, questi avevano protestato presso la Santa Sede. La quale inviò in India e in Cina il patriarca di Antiochia, Carlo Tommaso Maillard de Tournon, piemontese. Questi il 23 giugno 1704 pubblicava il suo giudizio con il quale condannava 16 pratiche. Poi si recava in Cina. Espulso da Pechino, pubblicava a Nanchino un decreto di condanna dei riti cinesi; fatto cardinale (1707), moriva prigioniero a Macao l'8 giugno 1710. "Prima edizione". Cfr. One of the most extensive Persian grammars written in English. "Matthew Lumsden (1777?1835), orientalist, was fifth son of John Lumsden of Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, and a cousin of Sir Harry Burnett Lumsden (1821?1896), army general. After education at King's College, Aberdeen, he went to India as assistant professor of Persian and Arabic in the College of Fort William, and in 1808 succeeded to the professorship. In 1812 he was appointed secretary to the Calcutta Madrasa, and superintended various translations of English works into Persian then in progress. From 1814 until 1817 he had charge of the East India Company's press at Calcutta, and in 1818 he became secretary to the stationery committee."?(Oxford DNB). Provenance: John L.
