[Barbados]. [Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies]
Four Early-20th Century Pamphlets on West Indian Agriculture
N.p. likely Bridgetown Barbados: Issued by the Commissioner of Agriculture 1916. Very good. Four pamphlets all in original illustrated wrappers as detailed below. A quartet of rare agricultural pamphlets published in a series of works by the Imperial Department of Agriculture for the West Indies in the early-20th century each focused on a different aspect of agricultural cultivation in the Leeward Islands St. Lucia and other locations in the West Indies. The pamphlets were issued by the British colonial government in Barbados and likely printed there. Each work includes detailed reports on resources for agricultural cultivation methods and challenges to crop production and other information relative to agriculture on the islands; one of the pamphlets is a promotional work for St. Lucia. The pamphlets are supplemented with tables of information and/or profusely illustrated with photographs picturing various aspects of West Indian agriculture. The works included here are as follows:

1 Summary of the Results of the Cultivation of Seedling and Other Canes at the Experiment Stations in the Leeward Islands. 1908-09. Issued by the Commissioner of Agriculture. Pamphlet Series No. 63. Barbados: 1910. 8100pp. Minor dust-soiling and edge wear. Mostly comprised of tables on the various types of canes found on Antigua and St. Kitts. OCLC reports just two copies at McGill University and Cambridge.

2 Coco-Nut Cultivation in the West Indies. Pamphlet Series No. 70. Barbados: 1911. 2iv46pp. Minor dust-soiling and edge wear. Profusely illustrated with images of coconuts and the sucking biting and boring insects who ravage them in the wild. OCLC reports six institutional holdings at Harvard McGill the University of Guelph Cambridge the Indian Agricultural Research Institute and the Bibliotheque Universitaire de Caen.

3 Edward J. Cameron. Hints to Settlers in St. Lucia. Pamphlet Series No. 80. Barbados: 1915 wrapper dated 1916. 228pp. plus a full-page map and ten duotone photographic plates. New and enlarged edition. Noticeable area of loss to top left of front wrapper bottom corner chipped wrappers detached. A fairly straightforward promotional touting the infrastructure health agricultural and other benefits of the island of St. Lucia. The work was written by the former Administrator of St. Lucia Edward J. Cameron. The work includes a full-page map of the island and several duotone photographs picturing the harbor various buildings a cacao plant "Coco-Nut Beach" views of the Experiment Station and most interestingly a group of indigenous agricultural laborers "Bringing in Limes" on the La Perle Estate. Only one copy in OCLC at Cambridge.

4 A.J. Brooks. The Agricultural and Economic Resources of St. Lucia. Pamphlet Series No. 81. [Military & War] [Barbados] [Race] [John R Eggleston]
1858 letter written aboard the USS Atlanta in Barbados from a future officer in the Confederate Navy and witness to the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. Contents include a racist rant against free blacks in Barbados
Barbados: n.p. 1858. Letter. Good. Letter. 8" x 10". 4 pages. 3 pages of contents. Page 4 clipped section at bottom. Paper folded and in very good condition otherwise.

Letter written aboard the USS Atlanta at Barbados December 27 1858. Eggleston writes: "I am perfectly willing to leave Barbados and its free impertinent darkies. I would like to lasso some 50 or 100 and put them to work in a cotton field. I am convinced that such a field is the only one in which the darky character can be truly developed. Here they do nothing but stroll about the streets & chatter like so many monkeys from sunrise to sunset. We employ them to coal our vessels and how I have wished for Jack Stringer with a bull whip among them whenever I have had anything to do with them".

Eggleston would later serve as a Lieutenant on the CSS Virginia and was later promoted to Captain in the Confederate Navy. Eggleston was one of the lieutenants of the Virginia Merrimac during its life under the Confederate flag. During his life Eggleston provided details of the legendary battle of the two ironclad ships which can be found under various web sites. n.p. unknown

[West Indies, Jamaica, Barbados, Caribbean]; Henderson John
THE WEST INDIES Painted by A. S. Forrest Described by John Henderson
London: Adam and Charles Black 1905. First edition. With 74 very fine and attractive colourplates from the paintings of Archibald Stevenson Forrest each with a captioned guard. Tall thick 8vo in the publisher's original pale blue cloth the upper cover and spine both decorated with ships craps clouds and sunbursts in brown ivory and gilt and with gilt lettering t.e.g. ix 272 4 ads pp. A handsome copy the plates all fine and bright some very occasional and light foxing within the text the lovely decorated binding is solid and firm with very little sign of wear but with a bit of mellowing to the spine front endpaper with cosmetic only spitting at the still-strong hinge. FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE MORE ELUSIVE TITLES IN BLACK'S TRAVEL SERIES A LOVELY BOOK IN FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. The blue seas and sun-drenched islands of the West Indies served as wonderful inspiration for both pen and paintbrush in this hard to find gem. Jamaica receives the lion's share of attention but other subjects include Barbadoes St. Lucia Dominica St. Thomas and Martinique. Archibald Forrest wonderfully captures the bright colourful scenery and colourful peoples of these tropic isles. Adam and Charles Black hardcover

BARBADOS The Paper Act of 1706
An original Manuscript Letter addressed to Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland then Secretary of State for the Southern Department signed by four Commissioners of the Board of Trade and Plantations including Philip Meadows and John Pollexfen reporting the complaints from Colonel Crow Governor of Barbados of the great Distractions he found the Island in at his Arrival occasioned by the late Paper Act . discussing the appointment of a Council Member now notoriously active in promoting of the late disorders .
Whitehall 29 July 1707. 2 pp. 12 x 8 inches integral blank leaf neatly mounted docketed concerning Mr Holder one of the Councill of Barbadoes. The Board of Trade and Plantations regulated foreign commerce enforced trade and navigation acts supervised colonial administration and negotiated commercial treaties. In 1706 the colonial assembly of Barbados a British colony enacted legislation that led to one of the more unusual monetary experiments in history creating a fiat domestic currency that was virtually legal tender. The legislation sparked a strong protest from merchants slave traders and other English traders the creditors in the economy of Barbados. The British Board of Trade acted to force the redemption of the paper money but the episode reveals the secret war between debtors and creditors that often surfaces when monetary institutions are evolving. This handsome letter is signed by William Lord Dartmouth Henry Lord Herbert John Pulteney and Sir Philip Meadows. Sir Philip Meadows 1626-1718 had a distinguished career as a diplomat representing Cromwell in international treaty negotiations. Meadows was the author of several works including Observations concerning the Dominion and Sovereignty of the Seas 1689. unknown
