One of the Greatest Crimes of this Century
Cover title. VG. Textual photo illustrations. Cyprus National Committee. Athens 1956 orig.wrappers 21x13cm 8pp. Concerning the 1956 execution of Cyprus Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston EOKA guerrilla fighters Michael Karaolis & Andreas Dimitriou. "Michalis Karaolis was a Cypriot guerilla fighter the first man executed by the British colonial authorities in the EOKA struggle 1955 - 1959.On August 28 1955 Karaolis along with two EOKA companions Andreas Panayiotou and Yiannis Ioannou executed a Greek-Cypriot Special Branch police constable named Herodotus Poullis in Ledra Street Lefkosia. All three men got away in the confusion that followed but Karaolis had to leave his bicycle behind. From Department of Transportation records the British were able to trace its ownership and Karaolis became a wanted man. According to Grivas' standard practice he had to join the guerrila fighters on the mountains. A close associate of Grivas and money-donor to the cause Yiannakis Drousiotis wrote a letter of introduction to Grigoris Afxentiou to accept him on his team. A few days later Karaolis with this letter in his pocket was stopped and arrested by Turkish- Cypriot policemen who handed him to the British. Karaolis was tried and convicted of PC Poullis' murder and was executed by hanging on May 10 1956 along with Andreas Dimitriou. He was buried in the Imprisoned Tombs in the Central Jail of Lefkosia. His death sparked anti-British riots in Greece where 4 persons died and 200 were injured" - Phantis [National Committee..,.] unknown

NUR ÇETINER.
The Cypriot mule corps in the First World War.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 132 p. The Cypriot mule corps in the First World War. This study aims to illustrate the complex situation of the Cypriot Mule Corps from the standpoint of Cypriots and to show that people can ignore their national and religious identities when they have to. Cypriot muleteers served in the British army in the Macedonian front during the First World War. Both Cypriot men and island mules were used in the war. Mules were used in the war due to their carrying ability under harsh geographical conditions. The British government utilized the existing economic problems in Cyprus to attract Cypriot support. For some Cypriots joining the war serving in the army was the only way to provide for the livelihood of their family. In fact, Turkish Cypriots participated in the Great War against the Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, there were differences in terms of religious creed between Greek Cypriots and the British: the Greek Cypriots were Orthodox while the British people were Protestant. Hence, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots had some troubles about joining the Great War. Despite these differences, Greek and Turkish Cypriots set aside their national and religious feelings and were united in the same army to serve Great Britain. Another important aspect of the Cypriot Mule Corps lies in the fact that the Turkish Cypriots joined the British army not only against their former Sultan but also against their compatriots who migrated to Anatolia and were subsequently recruited to the Ottoman army.

O'Malley, Brendan & Craig, Ian
The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion
In 1974 the Greek colonels ousted the Greek-Cypriot leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and Turkey retaliated by invading and seizing a third of the island. Cyprus remains split in two, like Berlin before the wall came down, bristling with troops and spying bases, and permanently policed by the United Nations. Henry Kissinger claimed he could do nothing to stop the coup because of the Watergate crisis, but this book presents evidence to support the view that it was no failure of American foreign policy, but the realization of a long-term plot. The authors describe the strategic reasons for Washington's need to divide the island. Their account encompasses an international cast of characters that includes Eden, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kissinger, Wilson, Callaghan, Grivas, and the leaders of the two halves of the divided island, Clerides and Denktas. 268p.plates. index. Dj slightly damagered while on shelf Book

The Cyprus Conspiracy: America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion
268 pages including index. Claims Kissinger was disingenuous when he claimed America could not prevent Turkey from seizing a third of Cyprus in 1974. Provides crucial evidence that this action was, in fact, the realization of a longstanding plan. Reveals the explosive strategic reasons why the island was divided, saving its top-secret defence and spying facilities from communist take-over or British defence spending cuts. Makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of great power politics and the strategic importance of intelligence gathering and the role these played in triggering one of the world's most intractable international conflicts. Includes black and white photographs and a 1999 personal interview conducted with Kissinger for this book. Appears unread. Book clean and unmarked with no wear. Light signs of handling to dust jacket. Excellent copy. Book
