TAHITI MORTIMER Mrs Favell Lee
The Night Toil; or a Familiar Account of the First Missionaries in the South Sea Islands.
London: G.J. Palmer for J. Hatchard and Son 1844. Octavo engraved frontispiece map and seven text vignettes; full contemporary calf; a fine copy. A particularly fine copy of an updated account of the London Missionary Society's activities in Tahiti aimed at a juvenile market but full of information not readily available elsewhere. Mrs Mortimer drew initially on the Duff voyage accounts of the late-1790s but for the later period used unpublished letters and journals and numerous reports printed in Missionary Transactions and the Quarterly Chronicle. Her account was first published in 1838; this second edition has additional material including a violent attack on the French Catholic missionaries who had returned to the island in 1843. Letters from Queen Pomare to Queen Victoria about the "invasion" are quoted from and there are recent voyagers' accounts of the island including Fitzroy's visit on the Beagle. Provenance: presentation inscription from Anna Everett to Lucy Edgar Clapham 20 December 1849. G.J. Palmer for J. Hatchard and Son unknown

TAHITI TAITBOUT M.
Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti située dans la Mer du Sud et sur l'esprit et les moeurs de ses habitants
Avignon and Paris: Froulle 1779. Spine label chipped but in fine condition otherwise. Octavo with an engraved frontispiece view of Tahiti; a fine copy in contemporary speckled half calf. First edition: the very scarce and earliest separate serious work on Tahiti predated only by the Omai-based fictions and the poetical satires on Joseph Banks; it is based for its facts on the reports of Wallis Bougainville and Cook and for its philosophy on Montesquieu and Rousseau. 'Taitbout's pamphlet is of interest not for the originality of its ideas but because it reveals how notions of geographical control deriving from Montesquieu and applied by the Forsters to the islanders of the Pacific could provide a rational explanation for the soft primitivism with which Bougainville Hawkesworth Banks Diderot and others had endowed the peoples of the Society Islands and add point and fire to a revolutionary pamphlet.' Bernard Smith European vision and the South Pacific 1985 p. 87. Tahiti was much discussed in Europe from the early 1770s and various voyage accounts were in print during that decade. The Tahitian Aotourou had travelled back to Paris with Bougainville in 1769 while Omai had reached London with Cook in 1774. 'After its successive discoveries by Wallis Bougainville and Cook Tahiti came to symbolize a living social and political experiment in the minds of many European philosophers: a primitive paradise that became spoiled and tainted by Western decadence. In this little work often attributed to Bougainville - perhaps because it borrows extensively from his narrative and the earlier accounts of Cook and his accompanying naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander - Taitbout speculates on the fundamental differences between the "homme sauvage" and the "homme civilizé" drawing from the example of Tahiti. He suggests that societies like Tahiti that evolved in isolation could offer political lessons to European nations but acknowledges that the arrival of Europeans on their shores will deal them a death blow. Taitbout's purpose in his own words translated is revolutionary: "to assist in bringing about the much-desired general revolution to which the human spirit will one day owe the free complete and perfect union of all men".' online resource at http://libweb5.princeton.edu/. Barbier notes that the book - published anonymously but now attributed to Taitbout - was in the past sometimes attributed to Bougainville. A German translation appeared in 1783. This copy has an additional work bound at the end P.A. Caron de Beaumarchais Le voeu de toutes les nations.dans l'abaissement et l'humiliation de la Grande-Bretagne 1778 Sabin 4178. Froulle unknown

TAHITI WEBBER John after
Waheiadooa Chief of Oheitepeha lying in State
London: Boydell 1819. Hand-coloured aquatint 280 x 410 mm. Whatman paper with 1819 watermark; very good. Arresting image of the Tahitian chief Waheiadooa Vehiatua lying in state. Cook recorded in August 1777 that his curiosity had taken him to view what his fellow officers had described as a "Roman Catholic Chapel" but which he discovered was what was known as a Tupapau in which the remains of Vehiatua were laid; the body Cook was told had been there for some twenty months. The structure beautifully realised in Webber's view resembled a small neat house decorated with coloured cloth and mats including a large piece of scarlet broad cloth which had been given to the Tahitians by Spanish missionaries. The plate was issued as one of Webber's Views in the South Seas. Following Webber's death in 1793 the publisher Boydell purchased the majority of his stock at auction and continued to colour and sell the views. A new edition was issued around 1808 this time as hand-coloured aquatints as opposed to the earlier edition that used the less economical method of soft ground etchings. As Joppien & Smith note in The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages the Views continued to be published for at least another decade with watermarks dating as late as 1820. It seems that after Boydell's death in 1817 the remaining stock was purchased by the firm of Hurst and Robinson and they carried on as successors; as the present example has an 1819 watermark it evidently dates from this issue see Douglas Cole John Webber: Etchings and Aquatints. Boydell unknown

TAHITI. WILSON William Comp. & WILSON Captain James.
A missionary voyage to the southern Pacific Ocean performed in the years 1796 1797 1798 in the Ship Duff. . . compiled from journals of the officers and the missionaries; and illustrated with maps charts and views. . . .

With large folding frontisp. map of the South Pacific expert repairs to closed tear at gutter margin old repairs to folds minor soiling 6 maps 4 folding 6 engraved plates 2 misbound. Recent brown half-calf over marbled boards renewed endpapers raised bands on spine gilt ruling black morocco & gilt spine label minor soot soiling to fore-edges of textblock occasional dustsoiling to margins of leaves including title occasional spotting stilla VG bright copy. First edition of this informative work detailing the first British missionary voyage to the South Pacific upon the HMS Duff compiled by William Wilson from his own journals those of Captain Wilson and of other missionaries on the voyage. The ship under the command of Capt. John Wilson carried 37 artisans and pastors of the London Missionary Society and their families who were resettled in the South Pacific on the islands of Tahiti Tonga and the Marquesas from 1796-98. During his voyages aboard the Duff Capt. Wilson discovered the archipelago of Mangareva which he named Gambier in honor of the British admiral sponsoring the expedition. The mission would prove successful primarily through the efforts of Peter Hagerstein a Swede who was a deserter from the HMS Daedalus in Captain Vancouver’s exploring expedition and by 1797 had become a significant warrior and absorbed into Tahitian society. He was able to explain the political intrigue in Tahiti interpreted for the missionaries and also warned them when the Tahitians plotted to attack them. The HMS Duff was captured later in Feb. 1799 by a French privateer making this the last voyage that the ship flew the missionary flag of three doves carrying an olive branch. Tasmania; Tahiti
Seed trade between Van Diemen's Land and the UK and vice versa and article on Queen Pomare agreeing to Tahiti becoming a French protectorate; in "The True Colonist; Van Diemen's Land Political Despatch and Agricultural and Commercial Advertiser"
Hobart Town Van Diemen's Land: Gilbert Robertson 1843. Very good condition. Tuesday January 3 1843 issue with articles including: the establishment of Tahiti as a French protectorate "The Conduct of the Judges" on the Van Diemen's Land Supreme Court and a retrospective of the past year in the colony. With a manuscript annotation in the top margin of the front page "the box being too large for the seeds we send a few papers - send some to us". This intriguing note implies a trade in seeds from Tasmania to the UK and vice versa. The Tahiti article includes the Proclamation of Protection of Tahiti by the French between Queen Pomare and Admiral Du Petit Thouars which the Admiral acting independently of the French government had extracted after threatening to attack. The proclamation is followed by a letter from "the British Residents of Tahiti" to Du Petit Thouars offering without irony "thanks for the provisional acceptance of the demand of Queen Pomare for the protection of his Majesty the King of the French . We are happy that an end is now put to the disorder and mal-practices that have hitherto characterised this port . Signed Thirty Residents". p4 col. 5. The British were in fact angry that Du Petit Thouars had forced Queen Pomare to sign; she had independently written to Queen Victoria asking that the islands be placed under British protection a request Victoria had had to reject in order not to worsen relations with France. Australian content includes the front page article on a case considered by the Van Diemen's Land court the oldest Supreme Court of Australia. With a lengthy analysis of Judge Montague's bias against Sidney Stephen who was a barrister who came to Hobart Town in 1838 where his brother Alfred Stephen was Attorney General. Alfred Stephen was involved in a dispute with Justice Montague; Sidney was dragged in and his professional integrity was soon under attack by Judge Montague. Sidney was disbarred left Van Diemen's Land gained a provisional admission to the bar in Victoria and ultimately moved to New Zealand for the duration of his legal career. 4 and 1/2 cols. in length with an additional 2 column article "The Judges and Mr. Stephen" on the following page. An additional article on Van Diemen's Land's preceding year: "Van Diemen's Land alone appears to have stood still or retrograded during the last year." p2 col. 1 with specific details on the cost and idleness of convicts the colonists' "country doomed to all the evils of a gaol" government expenditures the inferior flour and meat being imported the poor maintenance of roads & bridges and the failures of the Probation System 3 columns. Newspaper approx. 17.5 x 22" 4pp 39 column inches. Vol. XI No. 30. A couple of sml. marginal closed tears sml. separation at fold o/w very good condition.

Gilbert Robertson unknown
