A reprint of this work exploring the tradition of "Warning Out" in New England a process related to an ancient English law where inhabitants of a town were responsible for one another. This law impied the right to exclude people from the town for whom the did not desire to become responsible. This work reveals who was warned out including many prominent people and the effects of this process. VERY GOOD condition with some curling to the covers along the fore edges. Slight bumping to the corners. Very small stain on the last page of the text in the upper fore edge margin. Text clean and solid. Heritage Books unknown‎

Also present is an article on trapeze artists with a photo of Carl Wallenda coaching his five year old daughter Carla on the high wire. Cartoons by Peter Arno are also featured throughout. GOOD condition. Minor general soiling toning and fading to the wraps. Covers rather scuffed along the spine and hinges with some creasing and curling along the extremities and corners. With tips on exercise clothing etc. Children should not be allowed to share in the amusements of their elders. The Better Babies Bureau was established by the Woman's Home Companion in 1913 in an effort to "educate mothers in 'race betterment' methods through baby contests" and as such has been associated with the eugenics movement see Engs The Eugenics Movement on the Indiana University website. Primarily a history of the missionary work on the islands of Hawaii preceded by a short history of Hawaii and its people including the various wars and battles in the 1700s then progressing into a year by year account of the actions of Christian missionaries and the reactions/actions of the Hawaiian people. Hiram Bingham was part of the first group of Protestant missionaries to Hawaii and sought to reform much of the Hawaiian way of life including land holding and economic principles seeking to bring them into line with US values at the time see Wikipedia. POOR condition. Ex-theological institution with spine label interior stamping pastedowns and markings present. Rear cover CRACKED and very tenuously attached to the binding. Front hinge cracked and separated repaired with light brown cloth tape in a rather unsightly manner. Leather backstrip detached along the rear hinge with cracking chipping and creasing present including loss at the head of the spine. Leather scuffed and worn along the covers and extremities. Uneven fading and darkening. Minor scattered foxing and spotting throughout. Fold out map torn into two pieces neatly along the last righthand vertical fold. Sabin 5432.
