Chevalier Maurice:
The man in the Straw Hat
Epworth Press 1965 VG/GOOD . DJ is rubbed to most edges notably to upper edge and over spine. some creases to edges and the rear cream panel is a tad grubby. Firm binding. some faint foxing to edges of textblock - but not in text itself. spine dj is sunned. price-clipped. internally a good clean copy without inscriptions or marginalia. 1st. The life-story of the inimitable Maurice is a vivid and colourful account of the gay trouper who sang his way into the hearts of millions of people the world over. It is a stirring autobiography of an outwardly gay and glamorous life shown against the background of two World Wars each of which brought its threat to his life-and career. Here is a real-life drama with Maurice cast in many roles-the penniless boy the acrobat and clown the night-club singer the star of the Folies Bergere the soldier the boxer the film star. Interwoven with this human story is a sparkling array of famous personalities. The sensational Mistinguett Elsie Janis Nita Raya Yvonne Vallee Charles Boyer Jeanette MacDonald Claudette Colbert Douglas Fairbanks Marlene Dietrich have all played an important part in the life of the man who made a straw hat a cane and a gay smile internationally famous. Born of humble parents Chevalier in his fight for fame has known hardship frustration and disappointment. Epworth Press, 1965 unknown

Little Brown and Company 1960-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Unclipped jacket has slight tattering to the edges light foxing bindng tight pages clean and unmarked. From Wikipedia: "Maurice Auguste Chevalier September 12 1888 – January 1 1972 was a French actor Cabaret singer and entertainer. He is perhaps best known for his signature songs including Louise Mimi Valentine and Thank Heaven for Little Girls and for his films including The Love Parade and The Big Pond. His trademark attire was a boater hat which he always wore on stage with a tuxedo.Chevalier was born in Paris. He made his name as a star of musical comedy appearing in public as a singer and dancer at an early age before working in four menial jobs as a teenager. In 1909 he became the partner of the biggest female star in France at the time Fréhel. Although their relationship was brief she secured him his first major engagement as a mimic and a singer in l'Alcazar in Marseille for which he received critical acclaim by French theatre critics. In 1917 he discovered jazz and ragtime and went to London where he found new success at the Palace Theatre. After this he toured the United States where he met the American composers George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and brought Dédé to Broadway in 1922. He also developed an interest in acting and had success in the operetta Dédé. When talkies arrived he went to Hollywood in 1928 where he played his first American role in Innocents of Paris. In 1930 he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in The Love Parade 1929 and The Big Pond 1930 which secured his first big American hit Livin' in the Sunlight Lovin' in the Moonlight. In 1957 he appeared in Love in the Afternoon which was his first Hollywood film in more than 20 years. In the early 1960s he made eight films including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year. In 1970 he made his final contribution to the film industry where he sang the title song of the Disney film The Aristocats. He died in Paris on January 1 1972 aged 83. Chevalier Maurice
Ma route et mes chansons: Noces d'Or
Paris: Rene Julliard 1954. Paperback. Good. Wraps. From the library of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. 1909-2000 -- an iconic American actor from Hollwood's Golden Era and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II -- with his bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf. Inscribed to him by Chevalier on the half-title page. His connection to Chevalier seems to be a long one: Fairbanks Sr. 1883-1939 offered Chevalier a star billing with Mary Pickford but Chevalier was hesitant to perform in a silent film. It is ilkely that their paths crossed often as Chevalier primarily associated with Paramount studios and Fairbanks were part of a prolific and powerful Hollywood coterie that included such giants as Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith. Covers a little chipped at corners and along spine; leaves brittle and mostly unopened.

Rene Julliard paperback books
