London: Faber & Faber 1952. The interior of the book is crisp and clean. There is a small box of darkened paper on the title page but no marks damage or wear. The red covers are fresh with light wear at tips and corners. The dust jacket is also in very good condition. It is unfaded and has not been price-clipped. It has one very short tear which has been repaired on the verso but no other damage or problems. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover. Synopsis: Collis who had been a colonial administrator in Burma took the story of Queen Saw as set out in the "Glass Palace Chronicle' and uses it as a base for a story about the rise of a beautiful and intelligent farmer's daughter her marriage to the Crown Prince and the eventual fall of the Pagan dynasty. Page edges of the book are very slightly darkened with age and the previous owner's name is on the half title page. The book is illustrated with a black-and-white frontispiece and 20 one half plates and photographs as well as to sketch maps and a line drawing. All lives are lived on a number of different levels. The picture here given of Stanley Spencer is based on his most intimate thoughts and feelings. It shows the deepest side of his nature but it inevitably to some extent excludes the other levels on which he enjoyed much of his everyday life and on which he met his family friends and acquaintances. At all levels he was a man of exceptional charm originality and integrity but the aspect detected in this book is the one which throws the greatest light on Spencer the painter.
