Collis Maurice
The Land of The Great Image
London: Faber & Faber 1943. First edition 1943. Hardback. 260pp. Dust jacket. The Portuguese dominion in Asia had its capital at Goa. This was not only a political and commercial city but the ecclesiastical centre from which the Catholic Church sought to convert the East to Christianity. The author describes Goa as the most curious city ever built by Europeans in Asia with its Inquisitions slaves and baroque churches. In 1628 one of its residents - an Augustinian Friar - went on a diplomatic mission to Arakan then an independent kingdom on the Bay of Bengal. This kingdom later to become Burma is the land of the Great Image for it contained a colossal image of Buddha said to have been cast in his own lifetime. This is an exciting and fascinating story but does of course reflect a European view of the world from the perspective of its time. Sixteen illustrations and five plans/maps including a fold-out map at rear. Book in good condition. Boards a little soiled - mainly around fore-edges. Text block edges a little dust-soiled and with some light spotting. Internally very clean. Dust jacket good. Unclipped. Spine a little discoloured. Some edge wear and a little chipping mostly around the corners. Faber & Faber hardcover
