Following is taken from the publisher's blurb: ''Bavarian-born Christian Barthelmess in rebellion against the nineteenth century compulsory peacetime military service of his fatherland demonstrated his independent spirit by migrating to America and spending the greater part of his life in the US Regular Army. Beginning as an army musician he developed his avocation of photography to such an extent that it gradually supplanted his regular assignments. Barthelmess was keenly aware of the significance of the place and time in which he lived and he preserved many of the details of the frontier military adventure.'' After his graduation from West Point in 1873 Barthelmess served nearly eighteen years with the Twenty-second Infantry. This was originally published in November 1965; this copy is a second printing.
