First edition numbered and limited to 5000 copies this copy #691; 9 1/4 x 5 3/4; pp. 4 7-105 5; blue and yellow wraps printed in black and white; a few minor nicks to edges of wraps; a bit of age-toning; light wear to tips of spine; very good or better condition. Shortly after its first publication by The Olympia Press Lolita was subjected to censorship banned in France and seized by the French authorities together with 25 other works by the publishing company. Maurice Girodias founder of The Olympia Press and compiler of the current book vehemently opposed the ban and would eventually sue the Government and would win the lawsuit. Publishing the book as a solicitation for support Girodias included his own article "L'Affaire Lolita" a poem by Nabokov excerpts from Lolita letters and others. The title was a play-on-words and reference to "L'Affaire Miller" dubbed so by the French press some 20 years earlier and regarding the release of another banned book - Henry Miller's "The Tropic of Cancer" - published by Girodias' own father Jack Kahane. Paris: The Olympia Press 1961. Whole number one of four published. Quarto. Pictorial wrappers. Illustrated. Minor rubbing to wrapper but a very good copy. Edited by Maurice Girodias and Iris Owens. The periodical arm of the Olympia Press intended to showcase the coterie of authors who hovered around the imprint in Paris during the early '60s including a column by Terry Southern contributions by Burroughs Donleavy Durrell Daimler/Owens and others. Hounded by the French censors for reasons more political than prudish Girodias was able only to manage four issues over two years of what was intended as a monthly and then was forced to discontinue publication entirely.
