Few North Americans know that Bolivar had a dream a dream to free Spanish American colonies from Spanish rule and to unify those colonies into a strong federation. And those North Americans are just as unaware that Bolivar�s dynamic spirit has more than a hundred years later in i 964 inspired the present work which is the first of a series of historical novels Episodios Americanos by the Ecuadorian author Demetrio Aguilera Malta. Now the story of Bolivar the mighty warrior and eloquent statesman and the woman who inspired him is made available to North American readers in Willis Knapp Jones�s sensitive translation of Manuela La caballeresa del sol. �Caballeresa� in the novel�s Spanish title refers to Manuela S�enz the beautiful woman who fell in love with Bolivar and helped him accomplish his dream of independence for the Spanish American colonies. Even before she met Bolivar Manuela had received the Peruvian decoration of a �caballeresa del sol� the feminine counterpart of the masculine �caballero del sol� for her efforts in lower Peru�s struggle for independence and she was thereafter known by the epithet �Lady of the Sun.� Indeed as she worked among all classes of society to win financial and political backing for Bolivar she proved to be a fiery lady. Sustained and fortified by the devotion of Manuela S�enz Bolivar had the ability to inspire his followers not only with his presence but with his ideals. At the Battle of Ayacucho famous in South American history Bolivar�s patriots had only a small army to send against the well-trained and well-equipped Spanish army. Yet in battle the outnumbered patriots driven by the force of Bolivar�s ideals became insensible to pain. �The enemy artillery hit their targets. Pieces of men horses and weapons flew through the air. Heads legs arms bodies guns all mingled in the clouds of dust raised by each cannon ball. But there were no cries or moans. The soldiers still alive seemed to see and hear only the enemy. They moved steadily forward� with �the quick step of the conquerors.� With such a determined following Bolivar won constant victories. Though on the military battlefield Bolivar was a skilled general on the political battlefield he was less adept. Here Manuela S�enz aided him in finding friends and discovering foes. But lost in the euphoria of tributes paid to heroes he had difficulty in solving the administrative problems that follow independence. He could live a life of sacrifice and inspire a fighting force but he lacked the ability to live in splendor and manipulate politicians. Eventually Bolivar lost power and authority because of his failing health and the machinations of powerful enemies. When he left his seat of power in Bogota on a dramatic morning few sounds broke the funereal atmosphere. During the farewell anguished friends watched the ailing Bolivar helped onto his horse because he was too weak to mount. With a visible effort he sat erect waved good-by and rode away. An historical novel seldom displays the emotional verve that Manuela does nor follows actual events as accurately as does this story of Simon Bolivar and Manuela S�enz lovers caught in the fortunes and misfortunes of South American war and political upheaval.
