ADMIRALTY
The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys. A Naval Staff History. With a Preface by Malcolm Llewellyn-Jones. [With a Foreword by Admiral Sir Jonathon Band].
4to., First Edition, with 11 coloured plans (8 double-page), 4 full-page diagrams and several illustrations and charts in the text; pictorial boards lettered in white, a fine copy. Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified, not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. This volume contains Battle Summary 18 (Mediterranean Convoys 1941) and Battle Summary 32 (Malta Convoys 1942), completed by J. Owen and originally issued in 1944 and 1945 respectively. These summaries were combined and extensively revised by Pitcairn-Jones and re-issued in 1957 as Selected Convoys (Mediterranean) 1941-42. By this time Pitcairn-Jones had access to the full records including those captured from German and Italian forces.

TURNER J.F.
Periscope Patrol. The Story of Malta Submarines.
8vo., with 12 plates on 8; original pictorial wrappers, a fine copy. Much-needed, good quality paperback re-issue of the original Harrap edition of 1957. The best early account, with some rare photographs, of the harassment of Germany's North African supply route. During the bitter sixteenth-month struggle half the Axis shipping was sunk, but half the submarines (largely from the legendary 10th Flotilla) failed to return

GORDON Edward
HMS Pepperpot! The Penelope in World War Two. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER
8vo., First Edition, with 31 plates on 12 and 2 full-page maps in the text; cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a very good, bright, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter sunned as usual as backstrip. Vividly written biography of one of the hardest worked RN cruisers of WWII. Covers her service and crippling in Norway (where the author served aboard her) followed by the Mediterranean where she won many battle honours (notably with Force K). Her nickname stems from a fifteen-day period in Malta during which she survived 2,000 sorties by Axis bombers which dropped 3,000 tons of bombs and 14 torpedoes. Certainly one of the scarcest of all individual ship accounts of the RN in WWII. The Chivers re-issue of 1986 is also remarkably hard to find. Enser, p.61; Law, 1020.
|
|
MARS Alastair
Court-Martial.
8vo., First Edition; cloth, a very good, clean copy in the dustwrapper, the latter lightly creased and frayed at extremities. The author's own account of the ignominious end to his outstanding career as a submarine commander (most notably UNBROKEN), brought about by disillusionment with the Admiralty and finalised by a court-martial on a technicality.

|
WARREN C.E.T.
'The Admiralty regrets'. The Story of His Majesty's Submarine 'Thetis' and 'Thunderbolt'.
8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, 26 plates on 14, 5 illustrations and maps in the text, and endpaper diagrams; green cloth, gilt back, a very good, clean copy in worn and frayed dustwrapper. Well-written investigative account, by an established team, of the dramatic story of THETIS, lost on trials in Liverpool Bay in 1939 with the loss of ninety-nine lives. She was salved, renamed THUNDERBOLT, and served with distinction in the Mediterranean until her final loss with all hands in 1943. Increasingly elusive in this condition. Enser, p.419; Law, 1139.
