A French version of instructions on the main duties of the Knights of Malta appeared already in 1713. Manuel Pinto da Fonseca 1661-1773 was the 68th Grand Master of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem from 1741 until his death. In 1764 he negotiated with King Frederich II the Great of Prussia a re-unification of the Protestant Bailiwick of Brandenburg. But as Pope Clement XIII would not allow admission into a Roman Catholic organization of men viewed as heretics by the Church the agreement came to naught. Pinto undertook many buildings projects introducing the Baroque style throughout Malta. This is one of the earliest books printed by N. Capaci at his new press the Sicilian typographer began to work in June 1756 at the Palace of the Grand Master the dedicatee of the present work Emmanuele Pinto.- A nice and rare copy. - Not in British Library; cf. Small folio. Old stiff boards using a leaf of a Hebraic ms. Rome Typografia del Popolo Romano 1588. First edition of this new revision of the statutes of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem founded in 1099. This is one of the finest illustrated books of the Roman mannerism. Its woodcut material is borrowed from the Blado edition of 1556. The splendid work contains portraits of 52 dignitaries from the Blessed Gérald and Raimond du Puy who set down the rules in 1137 to Grand Master Hugues de Loubens-Verdale. They are the work of Philippe Thomassin 1562-1622 from Troyes one of the best engravers of his time teacher of Jacques Callot and Nicolas Cochin. The other illustrations show with great accuracy of costumes scenes representing the order's central tenets ideological and charitable aims. Many of the plates show the Grand-Master Hugues de Loubens-Verdale and in two of these he is seen being made a Cardinal by Sictus V an event which ocurred in 1587. Of great importance are the maps of Malta and Valetta the city which had been built by the Grand-Master Jean Parisot de la Vallette 1494-1568 following the unsuccessful siege of the Turks in 1565; the Order had been invested with the island in 1530 by Emperor Charles V. Thereafter the Catholic branch changed the name into "Order of Malta". The fine unsigned title-page with its elongated figures is similar to the work of Jacques Bellange. This copy includes 8ff. "Index materium" by Tolomeo Veltroni from which the date is taken. - Light waterstain in lower edge first 2 leaves carefully restored no loss altogether a good copy. - Mortimer Italian 273 in detail with illus.: "not all copies contain the index"; STC Italian 358; Lipperheide Of 3; Adams J-151 J-152 J-284; Sotheby's Schäfer Coll. Relation et Mémoire pour le Vénérable Chapitre du Prieuré d'Auvergne
Sans lieu Sans lieu, 1753. In-12 relié plein-veau brun, dos lisse très orné. XII + 270 + 16 pages pour la table des matières et l'errata. Manque de cuir à la coiffe, quelques petites piqûres sans gravité. Félicien de Monts de Savasse, reçu Chevalier en 1720 (cf. Abbé de Vertot), Commandeur de l'Ordre de Malte de 1733 à 1768 à Laumusse (près de Macon) relate une sorte d'état des lieux de la Commanderie, laquelle s'étend largement sur le pays d'Auvergne dans l'intérêt de l'Ordre et dans le sien, suite, semble t'il, a un différent avec le Commandeur de Beugnes (Bugnies), probablement le Chevalier de Nobet de Chenelette, travail qui lui demanda plus de 15 ans. En 1753, le Grand Maître de l'Ordre est Manoel Pinto Da Fonseca. Dans le corps de l'ouvrage, a deux reprises l'auteur précise qu'il fait imprimer ce travail pour que "chacun de ses confrères put juger commodément de l'importance des sujets qu'elle traite" et "... ceux en manuscrits de la longueur de celui-ci n'engagent personne à les lire " "qu'il m'en couterait beaucoup plus pour plusieurs copies manuscrites que pour son impression". L'ouvrage semble bien n'avoir été imprimé qu'à tout petit nombre, l'auteur précise encore "... au surplus j'aurai attention d'en rompre les planches aprés m'être nanti de tous les exemplaires, pour qu'à l'exception des personnes de l'ordre aucune autre n'en ait connaissance..." "... étant épuisé de l'excès de travail que m'ont causé les neuf Commanderies, dont celle de Laumusse...". Ouvrage de toute rareté dont nous n'avons trouvé trace que dans le Catalogo della biblioteca del Sagro Militar Ordine di San Giovanni Gerosolimitano de Francesco Paolo de Smitmer (1781) qui lui aussi annonce, comme c'est le cas de notre exemplaire, première partie. Nous avons tout lieu de penser qu'il n'y a pas eu de deuxième partie. La Langue d'Auvergne occupait une place prépondérante dans la hiérarchie de l'Ordre de Malte (son Chef portait traditionnellement le titre de Grand Maréchal de l'Ordre). Le Chapitre provincial de 1753 réunissait les commandeurs de la région pour statuer sur l'amélioration des commanderies, la réception des chevaliers et la défense de leurs droits seigneuriaux. Document imprimé rare relatif au fonctionnement institutionnel, administratif et jurisprudentiel du Grand Prieuré d'Auvergne (l'une des huit Langues de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem / Ordre de Malte, dont le siège provincial se situait à Bourganeuf puis Lyon). Ce mémoire adressé ou rédigé à l'attention du Chapitre provincial traite des privilèges, de la gestion des commanderies, des pensions ou des contestations féodales et seigneuriales opposant le Prieuré aux autorités royales ou ecclésiastiques sous le règne de Louiis XV. Bon exemplaire.
