‎1780. Paris De l'Isle et Buache 1780. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 64.4 cm x 48.7 cm. Sheet Size: 66.6 cm x 52.7 cm. Original map. In very good condition with the slightest traces of browning only. A very detailed and interesting map of Denmark - the Jutland peninsula and the archipelago of islands such as Funen Zealand and Bornholm- and the and southern Sweden. The Duchies of Brem and Meckelbourg and Pomeranie on the German coast can be seen in the lower part of the map. The cities of Hamburg Copenhagen and Rostock are included on the map. Relief is depicted pictorially. The sand banks and shallows along the coasts are also depicted. Block of annotative French text lies within the Baltic Sea. Guillaume Delisle 1675-1726 was a renowned mapmaker who led the reform of French cartography. A brother of the astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle and a student of the astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini Delisle learned to fix accurate positions by astronomical observation. The accuracy of his continental outlines and his reduction of gross errors in determining lines of longitude were considerable improvements over earlier maps. His earliest works published in 1700 were a pair of globes terrestrial and celestial maps of the continents and a world map in hemispheres. He prepared about 100 maps and wrote on mensuration and ancient geography. At 27 Delisle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences an institution financed by the French state. After that date he signed his maps with the title of "Géographe de l'Académie". Five years later he moved to the Quai de l'Horloge in Paris a true publishing hub where his business prospered. The major Danish cities like Copenhagen Aarhus and Odense are shown on the map. The map is filled with minute detail of fortresses cities towns and tiny villages. Relief depicted pictorially The lower right corner of the map bears a stunningly decorative cartouche featuring the Danish royal coat-of-arms and a Classical scene of putti and merfolk frolicking in the sea with the god Mercury in the foreground. A small compass rose lies off the Schleswig Holstein coast in the Colberger Heide. Frederick de Wit 1629/1630 – 1706 was a Dutch cartographer and artist who drew printed and sold maps. By 1648 during the height of the Dutch Golden Age De Wit had moved from Gouda to Amsterdam. As early as 1654 he had opened a printing office and shop under the name "De Drie Crabben" the Three Crabs which was also the name of his house on the Kalverstraat. In 1655 De Wit changed the name of his shop to the "Witte Pascaert" the White Chart. Under this name De Wit and his firm became internationally known. The first cartographic images that De Wit engraved were a plan of Haarlem that has been dated to 1648. The first charts engraved by De Wit were published in 1654 under the "De Drie Crabben" address. The first map that was both engraved and dated by De Wit was that of Denmark: "REGNI DANIÆ Accuratissima delineatio Perfeckte Kaerte van 't CONJNCKRYCK DENEMARCKEN" in 1659. His first world maps "NOVA TOTIUS TERRARUM ORBIS TABULA AUCTORE F. DE WIT" and Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula appeared around 1660. His Atlas began to appear around 1662 and by 1671 included anywhere from 17 to 151 maps each. In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667 was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. De Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. After Frederick de Wit's death in 1706 his wife Maria continued the business for four years printing and editing De Wit's maps until 1710. However as De Wit's son Franciscus was already a prosperous merchant by this time and had little interest in his father's business he did not take over the publishing house. In 1710 Maria sold the firm at auction. At the auction most of the atlas plates and some of the wall map were sold to Pieter Mortier whose publishing company grew to become one of the largest cartography publishing houses of the 18th century. The 27 chart plates from his 1675 Sea atlas were sold at the 1710 auction to the Amsterdam print seller Luis Renard who published them under his own name in 1715 and then sold them to Rennier and Joshua Ottens who continued to publish them until the mid-1700s. Elise Otté (30 September 1818 ? 20 December 1903) was an Anglo-Danish linguist, scholar and historian. She completed a number of translations into English from different languages. She assisted her step-father in translating the Norse poems known as the Elder Edda. Otté was born in Copenhagen on 30 September 1818, to a Danish father and an English mother called Mary Anne. In 1820, she moved with her parents to the island of Saint Croix (then Sankt Croix of the Danish West Indies). When her father died, she and her mother returned to Denmark. In Copenhagen, her mother met and married another British man, English philologist Benjamin Thorpe, and together, the family moved to England. Thorpe taught his step-daughter several modern languages as well as Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon to the point that she was able to assist his grammatical work, but they clashed on a personal level and she found him oppressive. In 1840, she moved to Boston, United States for some independence and to study physiology at Harvard University. She also spent time on a tour of Europe. he later returned to her step-father's and she assisted his translation of the Elder Edda. She found life with him intolerable, however, and in 1849, she moved to Scotland and worked at the University of St Andrews translating for George Edward Day. Otte was again assisting an academic who was older than her. When Day retired in 1863, she moved with Day and his wife to Torquay until his death in 1872. She continued her career from London, writing in scientific periodicals, but also publishing a monograph, Scandinavian history, in 1874. This work of academic study had lasting impact and it was reprinted up to 1939 under the title of "Norway, Sweden and Denmark" which matched the title of her 1881 work "Denmark and Iceland". Her breadth and depth of knowledge enabled her to publish a range of works. She translated a number of books from German by Alexander von Humboldt and another by the historian Johann Martin Lappenberg. Her range of skills enabled her to also translate the scientific Rambles of a Naturalist on the Coast of Spain, France and Sicily by the biologist Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau which was written in French. In 1884 she published grammars of both Danish and Swedish as well as textbooks aimed at students of German in 1859 and of Danish in 1879. She died at Richmond on 20 December 1903, in her eighty-sixth year.‎
