Der Autor Nikolai Bendix Lange, Diakon der Kieler Nikolai-Kirche, nutzte für seine Arbeit das 1790 erschienene Werk "Breve til en udenlandsk Ven om Danmark af Raadmand E. Dreyer", das er übersetzte, korrigierte und erweiterte. Ihm selbst war es nicht vergönnt, dieses Werk zu vollenden, da er im Dezember 1791 mitten in der Arbeit verstarb. Der Kieler Historiker und Bibliothekar Wilhelm Ernst Christiani (1731 - 1793) führte das Werk schließlich auf Bitten des Verlegers Hammerich zu Ende.

Bogen var tilt�nkt som l�rebog i aritmetik for de studerende p� Christian den IV's Akademi i Sor�. Bogen er p� latin og indeholder 61 opgaver som han indpakker - for at v�re p�dagogisk og fastholde studenternes interesse - i latinske hexametre med historisk mytologisk og anekdotisk indhold. De her indeholdte historier giver L. anledning til at frems�tte opgaver som studenterne skulle l�se aritmetisk. I forordet fort�ller han selv at han har bestr�bt sig p� at g�re sin matematik smagelig for den adelige ungdom ved praktiske opgaver og ved anekdoter<br><br>Lauremberg 1590-1658 var b�de mathematiker filolog og digter. Han blev af Chr. IV indkaldt til professoratet i matematik ved det adelige Akademi i Sor� hvor han forlod sin stilling i Rostock som det Filosofiske Fakultets dekan. I Sor� virkede han som professor i matematik og ingeni�rvidenskab fra 1623 til sin d�d i 1658. Han var en ikke ubetydelig matematiker og foregangsmand s�rlig kendt er han for sin indf�relse af logaritmerne i Danmark. Det er os� velkendt at Chr. IV havde udset Lauremberg til at udf�re det f�rste danske kartografiske v�rk ved opm�ling af landet. Hans virksomhed som korttegner var allerede begyndt i Mecklenburg og det ses at han i en del �r var optaget af denne virksomhed i Danmark. Kortv�rket blev imidlertid aldrig til noget til kongens store fortrydelse. Herefter overtog Johannes Meyer kortl�gningen. Lauremberg er yderligere kendt som en af tidens mest fremragende latinske poeter s�ledes indeholder hans "Satyra" fra 1636 spirene til de senere plattyske "Skj�mtedigte".<br><br>The very scarce first edition of one of the first textbooks in number theory published in Denmark The work should be used teaching mathematcs at the University in Sor� founded by the king Chr. IV in 1623. In 61 cases using latin epigrams of historical and mythological content he proposed 61 mathematical problems to be solved thus introducing pedagogical means in the teaching of mathemtics in Denmark.<br><br>Bibl. Plesner to inside of front board. � Rare first edition of this interesting anonymously written continuation of Voltaire's Candide which wraps up the adventures of the hero. <br><br>"Turning his back on both Voltarian satire and scepticism the novelist proposes a moralistic fable - the focal point of which is a rehabilitation of Leibniz's Theory of Optimism. The main body of the novel tells the story of Candide and his new wife the noble Z�no�de in their sumptuous Copenhagen townhouse. Before achieving this happy state however the couple endures various trials and tribulations reminiscent of the newly minted gothic genre. "Candide au Dannemarc" also features a satirical portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau." �duard M. Langille from the introduction to the new edition of "Candide au Dannemarc" edited by him. <br><br>Voltaire's "Candide" had inspired a sequel that appeared in 1760 which is attributed to Charles-Claude-Florent de Campigneulles but which might be by Henri-Joseph du Laurens. The present work is a direct continuation of that sequel although it ignores the happy ending of the previous work but evidently from the preface it is not written by the same author. It has still not been determined who the actual author is.<br><br>The part on Rousseau pp. 148-167 in the present work has become quite famous portraying him satirically as trying to make a living in Copenhagen from copying music while plotting to escape to America. The novel ends with Candide leaving Denmark to be the Danish ambassador in Russia.<br><br>A secoond edition appeared in 1769. hardcover
