El autor, notable geógrafo, experto en glaciología, fue director adjunto en 1938-1939 de la Expedición alemana a la Antártida, promovida por Hermann Goering, con la orden de construir una base para la flota ballenera alemana, realizar exploraciones aéreas y reclamar territorio de la "Tierra de la Reina Maud" (Dronning Maud Land), que recibiría el nombre de "Nueva Suabia", objeto durante décadas de varias teorías conspirativas, entre ellas la de la construcción allí de una gran base militar con recursos termales donde se habrían refugiado a partir de 1945 miembros de la élite nacionalsocialista y militares de alto rango.
