From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul - Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid- 19th to the 20th century is comprised of works by photography masters who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the 19th to the early years of the 20th century. The unique selection from The Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photography Collection reveal the magnificent structures, the daily life and the intriguing personalities of a past Istanbul. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city and an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as James Robertson, Félice Beato, Pascal Sébah, Polycarpe Joaillier, Abdullah Brothers, Guillaume Berggren, Bogos Tarkulyan, Mihran Iranian and Gülmez Brothers, not only document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, but also took us along a pleasant journey extending from Karaköy to Rumelifeneri through photographs taken with the difficult and onerous techniques of the time.

MARY MILLS PATRICK, (1850-1940).
A Bosporus adventure: Istanbul (Constantinople) Woman's College, 1871-1924.
New English Original leather bdg. HC. In special box. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. 240 p. A Bosporus adventure. A Bosporus Adventure is a history of the Woman's College at Constantinople by a former president. Mary Mills Patrick was born 10 March 1850 in Canterbury, New Hampshire to John & Harriet (White) Patrick. She graduated from the Lyons Collegiate Institute in Lyons, Iowa, in 1869. In 1871, by appointment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she became a teacher in a mission school in Erzurum. In her four years there Patrick learned ancient and modern Armenian. In 1875 she was transferred to the American High School for Girls in Üsküdar, and she became principal of the school in 1889. During her summers she lived in Greek villages. She thus was able to add Greek and Turkish to her repertoire of languages. After a study furlough in the United States she received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1890. In that year, after much planning and the securing of a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the American High School became the American College for Girls at Constantinople, later known as Constantinople Woman's College. Patrick served as president of the college from its opening. Her summer studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and Oxford resulted in a Ph.D. from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1897. Her dissertation was published in 1899 as Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism. When the college was destroyed by fire in 1905, a new site was acquired in Arnavutköyü on the European side of the Bosporus. A new charter in 1908 ended the college's ties to the mission board, and in 1914 the new campus was occupied. Patrick kept the school open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish revolution, and World War I, and through those changes it evolved from a school primarily for minority Greek, Armenian, and Bulgarian Christian women into a leading centre of higher education for Turkish women. She remained president until her retirement in 1924, after which she moved back to the United States. The American College for Girls later affiliated with nearby Robert College for men. Patrick's books include Sappho and the Island of Lesbos (1912); The Greek Skeptics (1929); Under Five Sultans (1929), an autobiography; and A Bosporus Adventure (1934), a history of the college.

Photographer: MIHRAN IRANIAN, (Turkish - Armenian photographer in Constantinople), (1890-19??).
Original photograph of the Entrance of the Bosphorus, taken by M. Iranian. 'Entree du Bosphore. 97: M. Iranian.
Very Good French Original sepia-toned photograph printed in a period photograph paper. 19x25 cm. Descriptive text in French. Chipped and tear on margins. Iranian was born in 1890 in Constantinople, Istanbul. It is known that he established his studio in 1891 in Pera district of Constantinople - the center of Armenian cultural and political life. In 1895 he enters into partnership with another photographer by the name of Gugasyan. By 1900s the business seems to have wound down as the images marked with his studio signature don't exhibit any over elements of the new century. Of all the major Armenian studios from Istanbul, Iranian's photographs are the rarest, and less than 300 are known to have survived. Iranian's primary subject was the city of Constantinople, its picturesque landscape, architectural heritage, and the many types of artisans and workers that populated its streets. Using the latest photography techniques, which allowed for very rapid exposures, Iranian captured the bustle of the city streets with remarkable clarity. Teeming with life and movement these images have a remarkable immediacy and documentary veracity quite unlike similar views produced by other photographers of the period. The typical approach for many of Iranian's contemporaries such as Sebah & Joalier or Guillame Berggren was to achieve as clear a picture as possible with perfectly balanced compositions and highly visible details - the hallmark of a 'good' commercial photographer. In contrast, Iranian's street views are full of photographic 'ruptures' - blurred figures in movement, surprised glances of people caught unawares - which give his works the viscerality of snapshots. But above all, Iranian was a master at capturing the mood of a place. Catching the Ottoman capital on the brink of rapid transformation, the photographer aimed to record many of its ancient streets and quarters disappear or change the appearance. Thus, like the Parisian street photography of Atget, Iranian's images are 'nostalgic for the present' that is irrevocably slipping into the past. In his studio, the clientele had the choice of a large range of costumes and props through which the modern urbanite could slip into the role of some long-gone ethnic or street type and become a part of history. It is this sense of melancholy that gives Iranian's photographs their subtle emotional power. This is also perhaps the reason why he was ultimately not as successful as a commercial photographer. Modernity had captured the imagination of the people and the wistful romanticism of Iranian's markedly less spectacular images was fast going out of fashion. The small legacy he has left behind is nevertheless of significance in the history of Near-Easter photography. He was one of the rare Ottoman photographers with an individual and subjective approach, which deserves a proper evaluation.

For the artist, there is a particularly productive relationship between the hand and the object. The hand must wield the brush masterfully; its skill must predominate when shaping the mass of clay. The fingers must find the way to elicit the finest sound from the strings of the violin, the keys of the piano. Here the hand searches for thought and feeling; the instant it finds what it has sought - in spite of its appetite - it must rise from the banquet table of sound or colour or form, otherwise, like every other thing that loses its equilibrium, it becomes subject to damage. The hand of the designer takes heed of the relationship between hand and object. Perhaps his relationship with the object develops as it passes through the filter of his relationship with the hand, because in the person-object relationship, holding and using are significantly predominant. But whether we are discussing art or design, if there is no relationship with creative potential in the relationship between matter and product, the hand is nothing more than a useful tool. From this aspect, the hand is the confessor of the heart, the brain and the aggregation that anticipates the creative potential... The collaboration between the Fine Arts Faculty of Marmara University and the Pera Museum was based upon the condition that the ten divisions of this Faculty would be included in the exhibition and that it would be comprised from the works of the graduating class. It was certain that this interdisciplinary exhibition would display an energetic and extremely colourful totality. It was important to present the exhibition within the framework of a shared theme that would unify these varying techniques and disciplines. Ultimately the discussions on this subject led to the choice of the title "el/le", because of the breadth of its meaning. In the "EL/LE" exhibition, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, ceramics, industrial products, interior design, textiles, photography and cinema come together in the opulence generated by the traditional arts of the hand. The "hand" is interpreted by the hands of artists and designers. What aspects of the hand will be beautified through the abundant energy of these creators? This exhibition provided the conclusive answer to that question.

REY ROMERO.
Spanish in the Bosphorus: A sociolinguistic study on the Judeo-Spanish dialect spoken in Istanbul.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Color and b/w ills. 466 p. "In 1492, the Spanish monarchs expelled tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and other territories. Most Sephardim headed eastward and settled in Ottoman lands, where their language, known as Judeo-Spanish, survived and thrived for centuries. This book is the result of fieldwork in the Jewish community of Istanbul. It provides a historical and modern sociolinguistic account of the survival of the Judeo-Spanish dialect after centuries of fragmentation, French bilingualism, "Turkish only" language policies, emigration, and globalization. This work analyzes social patterns on the acquisition and use of Judeo-Spanish in the community as well as linguistic change throughout different generations of Istanbulite Sephardim. Focusing on several grammatical features, these data demonstrate that bilingualism with Turkish and reduced linguistic spaces promote language change. In a world where linguistic diversity is rapidly shrinking, the survival and future of Judeo-Spanish is a testament to the close bond between language, culture, community, and identity".

SAFFET EMRE TONGUÇ, (1966-).
Istanbul: A bird's eye view. Photos by Halit Bilen.
New English Original bdg. HC. Small 4to. (26 x 18 cm). Edition in English. 342 p., color ills. Istanbul: A bird's eye view. Photos by Halit Bilen. I wanted to tell a tale of Istanbul. And Istanbul gave me the most magnificent of tales. I wanted to draw its picture - and unexpectedly, it unfolded all its colors generously, with ecstasy. It wasn't easy to describe a city so exultant, always surprising, a city that you can't get enough of exploring and that is sassy with its uniqueness. To describe it, I needed to understand it and to understand, I had to chase after my feelings. I faced 8,500 years of history, as well as the 21st century metropolis. I wrote this book to be worthy of Istanbul's name. As you get lost in the pages, you will see a journey through Istanbul from a viewpoint you haven't seen before, the richness of Istanbul with buildings that have never previously appeared in the same frame. I tell you about an Istanbul. An Istanbul that is multicultural, multicoloured, blending the old and the new, keeping differences side by side in its bosom, reconciling resentments with its beauty, amazing with its history. I held onto the wings of a seagull and wandered around my beloved city. I left room for you too. Trail behind me and watch a journey of Istanbul from another perspective. You will be surprised about how much this tale has yet to unveil.

SEDAD HAKKI ELDEM, (1908-1988).
[RELIEFS OF ELDEM] Rölöve. 2 volumes set. Vol. 1: Istanbul Bogaziçi köyleri yerlesmesi, resmî kültürel tas binalar, Istanbul ve Anadolu evleri, çesmeler ve selsebiller. Vol. 2: Birgi Çagir Aga Konagi.
Very Good Turkish Paperback. Folio. (34 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 2 volumes set: (70 p.; 64 p.). Eldem was a Turkish architect and one of the pioneers of nationalized modern architecture in Turkey. He was born in Istanbul (1908). He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (Department of Architecture). Between 1931 and 1932 he traveled to France, England, and Germany with a scholarship from the academy. In 1932 he opened his own office, also started teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts, and continued until retirement in 1978. In 1934 he worked for the National Architecture Seminar in Turkey which was a complete disaster for him because of the discussions between modern architecture and traditional architecture. In 1938 he designed the Turkish Pavilion in New York Exhibition. Sedad Hakki Eldem represented the Turkish Republic at the International Union of Architects in Lozan (1948) after Second World War. Also in the same year, Sedad Hakki worked with his colleague Emin Onat on the project of Istanbul Palace of Justice. He worked on proportions and architectural organizations of Ottoman domestic houses, 18th and 19th-century palaces, and mansions. He was known as a role model and pioneer to reinterpret the Classical Ottoman Patterns in modern architecture. He was a part of the Former Artifacts Maintain Council (Eski Eserleri Muhafaza Encümeni) between 1941 and 1945 and also a part of the Supreme Council of Antiquities and Monument Real Estate (Gayrimenkul Eski Eserler ve Anitlar Yüksek Kurulu) between 1962 and 1978. His thought was about nationalizing Modern Architecture. He basically thought that International Style in architecture should not be applied everywhere. Some things should be changed in the design by considering the national and domestic texture. He has won the international Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1986 with the project of Zeyrek Social Security Facilities. Sedad Hakki Eldem's architecture has basically 4 main periods. The first of them, between 1928 and 1934, is known for the instability of his work. After that, the second period is popular with modern trials on Ottoman architectural organization. The time frame of this period spans from 1934 until 1952. The third period of his architecture has lost its Ottoman influence, it looks more modernized between 1952 and 1962. The last part of Eldem's Architecture known for his double approach to projects. This final period started in 1962 and lasted until his death in 1988. (Wikipedia).
