Millingen J. V.

Miles, Margaret M (Ed )
AUTOPSY IN ATHENS; Recent Archaeological Research on Athens and Attica
Oxbow Books. 2015. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Slight waviness to endpapers.; This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue” excavations of recent years conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material using new techniques and applications brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive first-hand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by re-examining material from older excavations and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambience of the ancient city for passers-by filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy – in the sense of 'personal observation' – in Athens that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travellers and academics to the present day.; 11.3 X 8.8 X 0.7 inches; 224 pages . 1782978569 . ROME, THE GREEK WORLD, AND THE EAST Volume I: the Roman Republic and the Augustan Revolution
Very light rubbing to boards. ; Xxii, 383pp, maps. ; Studies in the History of Greece and Rome; Vol. 1; 383 pages; Opening this collection of sixteen essays is a new contribution by Millar in which he defends the continuing significance of the study of Classics and argues for expanding the definition of what constitutes that field. In this volume he also questions the dominant scholarly interpretation of politics in the Roman Republic, arguing that the Roman people, not the Senate, were the sovereign power in Republican Rome. In so doing he sheds new light on the establishment of a new regime by the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus.

DJ has tear to front panel and minor edgewear.; 345 pages; It is a commonplace of modern scholarship that the Athenians hated and despised the Persians but the claims of contempt are disproved by the evidence of archaeology epigraphy iconography and literature all of which reveal some facet of Athenian receptivity to Achaemenid Persian culture. The Athenian response was as richly complex as the spheres of interaction: both private and public elite and sub-elite. It appears in pot shapes clothing luxurious display and monumental architecture. ANCIENT GREEK ATHLETICS
Light shelfwear to book. Pencilling to a few pages. Red pen correction to 1 page. Spine very slightly slanted. DJ is rubbed with minor shelfwear and creasing with 1 small tear. ; A considerable number of academic and popular studies on ancient sports have been, and are due to be, published in this Athenian Olympic year (throwing the opening statement of this book into some doubt: `Ancient Greek athletics as a field of study does not suffer from overpopulation') but this study stands out among the best. Miller draws on recent archaeological and historical discoveries to discuss in comprehensive detail all aspects of games and athletic competitions in ancient Greece. Throughout Miller places athletics in its social context because, as he argues, sport was one of the ways in which Greeks could aspire to their cultural ideal, to be civilised men. Supported by numerous photographs, often in colour, and illustrations of sites and objects that depict competitions, the scholarly text describes in fascinating detail the origin of athletics, the Olympic Games and other festivals, the role of women in this male domain, the relationship between an athlete and a hero, Greek recreation, the gymnasium, sport as entertainment, professional athletes and the political side to competitions. Includes a glossary. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 288 pages

The Prytaneion: Its Function and Architectural Form
"The Prytaneion was a structure central to the civic life of the ancient Greek city-state. In it was housed the hearth of Hestia with its eternal fire symbolizing the well-being of the state. To it were invited distinguished foreign visitors for meals; citizens who had performed some special service to the state were also entertained there. The prytaneion was the 'home' of the state and the architectural manifestation of its life. The obvious ubiquity and importance of the prytaneion in antiquity is not reflected in the pages of modern scholarship, largely because only two structures have been excavated that can be firmly so identified. In this book Mr. Miller seeks to define the functions and the architectural form of the prytaneion by assembling and analyzing historical and epigraphic references to it. His analysis yields explicit references to various architectural parts of the prytaneion as well as a definition of the function of the building from which other architectural elements can be extrapolated. It provides a set of architectural elements essential to any prytaneion and usable as criteria of identification for excavated structures. This book is intended to serve both as a reference work for those interested in ancient civic life and civic architecture and as a guide to investigators of ancient cities still to be excavated."-258p.+ Plates,.illus bibliography index. THESEUS TRAGEDY AND THE ATHENIAN EMPIRE
Oxford University Press. 2011. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very faint shelfwear. Underlining in pencil to a few pages.; Oxford Classical Monographs; 304 pages; This book traces the development of the Theseus myth and its importance for Athens.
