What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. ‎L'ouvrage présente sur plus d'un siècle l'approche, dans sa réalité géographique, d'un pays longtemps resté une province de l'imaginaire occidental. Écrivains et artistes européens construisent depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle l'histoire de ce voyage , dont sont ici reconstituées les étapes : après les premières illustrations des « voyages pittoresques » dans les années 1780, se manifeste l'engouement romantique appelé « philhellène » pour la lutte des Grecs contre les Turcs, soutenue par Byron.Le circuit dans le Péloponnèse et les îles prend ensuite sa place au sein du périple des Orientalistes dont l'escale grecque est ici précisément reconstituée. Les séductions de l'exotisme ne réduisent pas pourtant l'intérêt pour l'Antiquité qui acquiert avec les grandes fouilles de la fin du siècle (Olympie, Delphes, l'Acropole d'Athènes) un nouveau visage, dont l'archaïsme nourrit la modernité des avant-gardes .Au fil de ces voyages, la Grèce apparaît non comme « un sublime opéra qui s'est tu », « une scène désertée où gisent épars tous les instruments de l'orchestre », selon les termes de Maurice Barrès, mais comme un atelier fécond, riche de croisements et de métamorphoses. Des liens privilégiés s'établissent entre la Grèce et divers pays d'Europe , entre les artistes anglais et les Iles Ioniennes, entre Athènes et Munich, au temps de la monarchie bavaroise, avec la France enfin qui crée en 1846 l'Ecole d'archéologie.Ces traversées européennes ne font pas oublier « l'orientalisme perpétuellement en suspens dans toute pensée grecque », évoqué par Marguerite Yourcenar, dont les voyageurs retrouvent les échos, aux rives de la Méditerranée. Notes et croquis en retracent l'unité, dans les paysages, les costumes ou les monuments parmi lesquels ceux de l'art byzantin occupent une place privilégiée. Dans cet atelier multiple se dessine ce que Matisse, dont l'oeuvre a puisé à toutes ces sources, appelait « le sentiment grec duquel nous descendons ».‎
