Modrzejewski Mélèze Joseph
The Jews of Egypt from Rameses II to Emperor Hadrian
8vo large Paperback. 279pp. Hellenistic Egypt was the setting for perhaps the first Jewish Golden Age, a time "golden" in Jewish memory as an era of vibrant cultural interaction between the Jews and their gentile hosts. This is the story of the adventures and misadventures of the people of Israel in the land of Egypt the years shrouded in the mists of biblical history under the Pharaohs; the strange intermezzo of the Jewish mercenary detachment on the island of Elephantine on the upper Nile; the apogee of Jewish culture under Ptolemies; and finally, the Jewish community's rapid decline and catastrophic disappearance under Roman rule. Joseph Mélèze Modrzejewski uses scientific analysis to illuminate the reality underlying our image of the past. The biblical accounts and Jewish and pagan literary texts are juxtaposed with discoveries of a century of archaeological and papyrological research that has unearthed the edicts of emperors as well as the humble correspondence of common people. In a tantalizing epilogue, Modrzejewski probes a turning point in Western civilization: the brief but crucial episode when budding Christianity and the Alexandrian Jews parted company.

The Indo-Greek Coins
Signed and inscribed by author upon half-title page. xvi, 196 pp plus six black and white photographic plates illustrating ancient coins, and one plate showing coin monograms. Index. Author's inscription indicates this copy was submitted to the British Museum in 1968 for review. "The chief merit of this book is that it reviews all that has been done on the subject by previous scholars, both Indian and foreign, and embodies the fresh data with fresh interpretations. It is a welcome addition to the existing literature on the subject of ancient Indian history in general, and on that of the early Indian numismatics in particular." - Foreword. Bit of writing on front flap of dust jacket which shows average wear and is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy of this important reference. Book

Jdische Orte in Thessaloniki Ein historischer Rundgang / Jewish Sites in Thessaloniki Brief History and Guide IN GERMAN
Athens: Lycabettus Press 2009 New - This is the German language editoin of this book and it will be will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece "Thessaloniki has long been considered Greece's foremost multi-cultural city because for many centuries its history has been marked by the peaceful co-existence of Christians Muslims and Jews. Between 1492 in fact and 1912 the Jewish community was the largest of all ethnic communities living here. This thriving community set the tone of Ottoman Thessaloniki making it known as the most famous Jewish city in the world widely referred to as the Jerusalem of the Balkans. Visitors now coming for the first time to Thessaloniki encounter a basically Byzantine city because historical events such as the devastating fire that destroyed most of the Jewish monuments in 1917 and the annihilation of the Jewish community during the German occupation erased the city's Jewish character. Reconstruction after the end of World War II which reached its peak in the 1960s made the few remaining traces of the two thousand year Jewish presence in the Macedonian capital even less evident. This informative small book provides a clear image of the community's long vibrant history; has short biographies of a few of the community's leading members; and describes with pictures the major remaining buildings members of the community constructed. It enables foreign and local visitors to discover even in part the surviving traces of the Jewish and multi-cultural nature of Thessaloniki." Paperback 90 pages 3 maps 35 color photographs bibliography index. 1st Greek Ed. Softcover. New Book from Greece. Lycabettus Press unknown
