‎Dans un rapport au Directoire du 1er août 1797, Bonaparte relate ainsi l'arrivée des Français dans les îles Ioniennes : « Un peuple immense était sur le rivage pour accueillir nos troupes avec les cris d'allégresse et d'enthousiasme qui animent les peuples lorsqu'ils recouvrent la liberté. À la tête de ce peuple était le Papas ou chef de la religion du pays, homme instruit et déjà d'un âge avancé. Il s'approcha du général Gentili, et lui dit : "Français, vous allez trouver dans cette île un peuple ignorant dans les sciences et les arts qui illustrent les nations; mais ne le méprisez pas pour cela ; il peut devenir encore ce qu'il a été; apprenez en lisant ce livre à l'estimer." Le général ouvrit avec curiosité le livre que lui offrait le Papas, et il ne fut pas peu surpris en voyant que c'était l'Odyssée d'Homère. » Cette anecdote résume à elle seule le fantasme de la France révolutionnaire sur les Grecs modernes : on y trouve la Grande Nation libératrice, le peuple ignorant mais rempli de gratitudes, le lien miraculeusement rétabli avec la Grèce ancienne, et la réappropriation par la France en marche de l'héritage antique. La représentation de l'autre est ainsi faite de ces diverses tensions entre un passé glorieux et un présent amnésique, la liberté et l'esclavage, l'estime et le mépris... Ce livre, tissé dans des textes d'époque, donne à voir une représentation collective où le Grec dégénéré joue comme miroir du Français régénéré par la Révolution. L'auteur a, pour ce faire, exhumé une correspondance consulaire jusqu'ici inédite qui, à côté des récits de voyage, constitue un remarquable témoignage des espoirs et inquiétudes de fonctionnaires en perdition. Car comment traduire en actes la nouveauté révolutionnaire lorsque les Anglais contrôlent les mers, et que le modèle antique oblitère la réalité ?... Comment passer d'une Grèce à l'autre ? Guérin), avec une grande carte dépliante en couleurs (en grec)‎

‎Exceptionnel exemplaire de l'édition originale, enrichi de nombreux documents. On y trouve tout d'abord une lettre autographe signée de l'auteur, qui adresse ses remerciements au préfacier Gustave d'Eichtal ; l'auteur conclut ainsi : "Je vous remercie des listes et du Galignani. J'ai reçu le coffre contenant 40 exemplaires que Hachette m'a adressé". On trouve en suivant deux coupures de presse reliées en tête de l'ouvrage, extraites du Journal des Débats (article d'Ernest Vinet du 21 février 1866, et article de Ch.Daremberg du 30 mars 1867 qui y fait un long éloge de l'ouvrage, de son auteur crétois M. Nicolaïdès et de son préfacier : "Les résultats obtenus par M. Nicolaïdès sont très simples et très importans. Le premier, c'est que la topographie de l'Iliade est d'une merveilleuse exactitude, et le second, c'est que la stratégie y est absolument conforme aux règles de l'art militaire pour les armées anciennes". Il cite également le préfacier qui se réjouit du renouveau littéraire "qui aujourd'hui se manifeste d'une manière si remarquable parmi les Hellènes, non-seulement à Athènes et à Constantinople, mais partout où subsiste, partout où se forme quelque ancien ou nouveau foyer de vie hellénique". On trouve également in fine un long compte-rendu de l'ouvrage lu à la Société de Géographie par M. V. Guérin, ainsi qu'une coupure de presse d'un article grec daté de 1867., et une dernière coupure de presse (compte-rendu de l'ouvrage signé de A. Nefftzer). Ce rare et exceptionnel exemplaire précède de seulement 3 ans la découverte de Troie par Schliemann. Bon état (accroc habituel sans manque à la carte, ancien dos remonté sur le nouveau dos, bel exemplaire par ailleurs) pour cet exemplaire très remarquable. Exceptional copy of the original edition, enriched with numerous documents. This scarce was published only 3 years before the discovery of Troy by Schliemann, in 1870.‎

It retained its independence despite the recovery of Constantinople by the Greeks in 1261. Each of its rulers acquired the Byzantine titles of Despot from which the term Despotate was coined to describe their territory. They preserved their autonomy partly by seeking support from their foreign neighbours in Italy. The fortunes of Epiros were thus affected by the expansionist plans of the Angevin kings of Naples and the commercial interests of Venice. Until 1318 it was governed by direct descendants of its Byzantine founder. Thereafter it was taken over first by the Italian family of Orsini then conquered by the Serbians infiltrated by the Albanians and appropriated by an Italian adventurer Carlo Tocco. Like the rest of Byzantium and eastern Europe it was ultimately absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century. Un piccolissimo tarletto al margine interno delle prime 3 carte, praticamente invisibile. Esemplare leggermente ed uniformemente brunito a causa della qualità della carta utilizzata. Prima assai rara edizione, da non confondersi con la comune seconda edizione, stampata l’anno seguente, di questo curioso studio del noto antiquario, professore e storico tedesco, Johann Nicolai (1665-1708) che laureatosi all’Università di Iena nel 1676, dopo aver seguito corsi di studio anche a Helmstiidt, Lipsia, Marburg e Giessen, fu a lungo professore di antichità all’Università di Tübingen. Nato a Stadt-Ilm, nella contea di Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt nel 1665, fu autore prolifico e curioso, oltre che appassionato collezionista ed apprezzato antiquario. Fra le sue opere principali sono da citare: "de Mercurio et Hermis" 1687; "de ritu antiquo et hodierno Bacchanaliorum" 1696 ; "De triumphis Romanorum" 1696; "De luctu Graecorum" 1696 che qui presentiamo; "De Phyllobolia" 1698; "de nimbis deorum" 1699; "De iuramentis Ebraeorum, Graecorum, Romanorum" 1700; "Antiquitates ecclesiasticae" 1705;4 vols., 1706. Il “De Luctu” è un forbito studio dei riti funerari e delle credenze degli antichi greci, ricavati dalle testimonianze degli autori classici ma anche dai moderni scavi archeologici.
