Il volume propone una nuova interpretazione del processo che portò all’unificazione della penisola nel IV e III secolo a.C. Basandosi su di un’ampia rassegna delle fonti storiche, ma soprattutto del materiale epigrafico e archeologico più recente, l’autore ricostruisce un quadro complesso ed eterogeneo di connessioni che legavano fra loro famiglie romane e italiche, attraversando l’Italia intera. Il ruolo della diplomazia e della contrattazione vi appare almeno equivalente a quello della minaccia bellica. Da una parte e dall’altra, vi furono probabilmente casate nobili che si allearono per costituire una nuova entità politica in un contesto mediterraneo globale che per la prima volta favoriva l’emergere di imperi con ampi territori.

In Themistius's public orations, he played the role of imperial panegyrist, but in the "private" or unofficial orations presented here, the senator concerns himself with apologetics, rhetorical and philosophical programs, material of autobiographical interest, and ethical themes. The speeches are valuable as evidence for the political, social, philosophical, religious, and literary history of fourth century Byzantium, and as examples of pagan ideology and eloquence in the newly Christianized court.
