Walker, Henry John
THESEUS AND ATHENS
Review of book tipped in. Dustjacket has faint creasing; 0.85 x 9.32 x 6.32 Inches; 240 pages; Theseus is celebrated as the greatest of Athenian heroes. This work explores what he meant to the Athenians at the height of their city-state in the fifth century B. C. Assembling material that has been scattered in scholarly works, Henry Walker examines the evidence for the development of themyth and cult of Theseus in the archaic age. He then looks to major works of classical literature in which Theseus figures, exploring the contradictions between the archaic, primitive side of his character and his refurbished image as the patron of democracy. His ambiguous nature as outsider, flouting accepted standards of behavior, while at the same time being a hero-king and a representative of higher ideals, is analyzed through his representations in the work of Bacchylides, Euripides, and Sophocles. This is the only work of scholarship that examines the literary representation ofTheseus so thoroughly. It brings to life a literary character whose virtues, flaws, and contradictions belong in no less a degree to his creators, the people of Athens.

CLEOPATRA OF EGYPT From History to Myth
Light edgewear to wraps. Spine a bit creased. ; This lavishly illustrated catalogue coincides with a major international exhibition celebrating images of Cleopatra. It explores how she was depicted during her own era, in works ranging from coins to life-size sculpture. Exciting new discoveries are featured--including seven Egyptian-style statues believed to represent Cleopatra, and two portraits probably commissioned while she was living in Rome with Julius Caesar. The book also examines interpretations of Cleopatra from the Renaissance to modern times, as seen in paintings, ceramics, jewelry, plays, operas, and film. In addition, recent archaeological finds from Alexandria (Cleopatra's capital) and from Rome illustrate aspects of life in Cleopatra's day. ; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 384 pages

WALTER PATER
STUDI GRECI. A CURA DI PAOLA COLAIACOMO.
Collections of Essays are anthologies that have been compiled in order to demonstrate the works of a number of essayists. The list of essayists who have been active throughout the world and throughout time, is extraordinary. Descrizione bibliografica Titolo: Studi greci Titolo originale: Greek Studies. Eternal Greece
Vintage copy " Ancient Greece was the fountainhead of Western civilization, and the richness of the legacy handed down to later generations by the Hellenic world is without parallel. Today, only weathered monuments, some little more than ruins, fragments of friezes and isolated sculptures remain to bear tangible witness to this once flourishing pre-Christian culture. But its spirit lives on: in the records of its poets, dramatists and historians, and in the very blood of its inheritors. Dr Hurlimann and Mr Warner, by dint of a singularly happy collaboration, have succeeded in bringing Ancient Greece once more before our eyes. The former has, with his camera, captured all the qualities that make up the perfection of Greek architecture; the milky clarity of the white Attic sunshine on marble, the forlorn dignity of sacred grove and deserted amphitheatre, the opalescent shimmer of Aegean bays. To complement these admirable pictures, the author of Men and Gods and Greeks and Trojans gives us a lucid account of what he considers to be the salient features of Hellenic civilization, incorporating a number of his own entirely new renderings from the works of Ancient Greek writers. Here is a feast for the eye and for the mind. No such authoritative yet readily assimilable record of 'the glory that was Greece' Large format survey of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, printed in a large size type face and with marvellous photographs in B & W and colour.175p. illus. Cover slightly sun faded and soiled. Book
