Che giova chiederne la fine agli dèi? La pace viene con un padrone. Attraverso la poesia epica, il mondo antico celebra le proprie origini e la propria grandezza. Ma nella «Pharsalia» di Lucano, giovane e irrisolto nipote di Seneca, non è la voce degli dèi, né quella delle muse a farsi poesia, ma quella di un uomo che racconta una storia vicina e tragica, la guerra civile, che al popolo romano ha tolto la libertà. Un poema dunque tutto umano, un canto dell'inquietudine che tenta di risalire alle cause del male, indagando gli animi di coloro che il male lo hanno voluto, come Cesare, abbagliante e inarrestabile, e Pompeo, antica quercia priva di linfa. E che rintraccia un unico disperato barlume di speranza in colui che non si è piegato alle ragioni del potere, Catone, modello di virtù magnanimo e dolente. I versi di Lucano riecheggiano così l'età di Nerone e di una generazione infelice, che assiste all'esercizio di un potere politico iniquo e impossibile da contrastare perché assoluto, e che vagheggia di tornare a un tempo irripetibile, quando Res publica romana significava libertà.
