‎Art and Experience in Classical Greece‎

‎Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1979 "An account of the development of Greek art in the Classical period about 480-320 BC which places particular emphasis on the meaning and content of Greek sculpture architecture and painting. Professor Pollitt reminds us that the visual arts in Greece as elsewhere were primarily vehicles of expression. He does not ignore formal development but always relates this to social and cultural history which it reflected and from which it grew. While his subject is art he refers frequently to the literature and philosophy of the period which were shaped by the same influences." 205p. illus. bibliography. index. Reprint. Softcover. Fine. ‎Histoires. Tome IV : Livre IV.

By means of a chapter structure that is well designed and logical they take us through each period of Greek history . Each chapter begins with a discussion of the sources for that period and includes annotated endnotes that deal extensively with recent scholarship. Unlike many other histories the book goes into depth on the Hellenistic period as well as the Bronze and Dark Ages. Although the Spartans and Athenians naturally dominate the authors consider Sparta before Athens reflecting the order in which the moderns have admired them. An appropriate balance is found between political social and cultural history and the authors display no outlandish prejudices to derail this noble effort" 512p. illus. bibliography.index Text clean and neat but some minor scuffing to paper wraps. ‎FAMILIES IN CLASSICAL AND HELLENISTIC GREECE Representations and Realities‎

‎Oxford Clarendon Press. Near Fine. 1998. Paperback. 0198152604 . Very light shelfwear. Bibliographical ref written in pencil to rear wrap. ; With this volume Sarah Pomeroy builds on the groundwork she laid in Xenophon Oeconomicus: A Social and Historical Commentary Oxford 1994 and provides the first comprehensive study of the Greek family. Knowledge of the family and kin groups is fundamental to understanding the development of the political and legal framework of the polis a community of oikoi 'families' or 'households' rather than of individual citizens. Pomeroy offers a highly original and authoritative account of the Greek family as a productive and reproductive social unit in Athens and elsewhere during the classical and Hellenistic periods taking account of a mass of literary inscriptional archaeological anthropological and art-historical evidence. Despite the unflagging scholarly interest in the development of the polis until recently little attention has been paid to the history and structure of its smallest constituent the oikos. Pomeroy seeks to show that the Greek oikos had several versions: a pseudo-kin group restricted to male citizens; a mixed family group oriented toward the public in which men predominated; and a family group of a more private nature that accommodated women to a greater extent though without necessarily excluding men. Public legislation and private custom concurred to perpetuate the oikoi expecting it to endure longer than the lifespan of any individual member and to bear economic and social burdens imposed by the state. ; 272 pages . ‎The Murder of Regilla: A Case of Domestic Violence in Antiquilty‎

‎8vo, hardcover dj 249pp. From an acclaimed author comes a fascinating story of the life, marriage, and death of an all but forgotten Roman woman. Born to an illustrious Roman family in 125 CE, Regilla was married at the age of fifteen to Herodes, a wealthy Greek who championed his country s values at a time when Rome ruled. Twenty years later - and eight months pregnant with her sixth child - Regilla died under mysterious circumstances, after a blow to the abdomen delivered by Herodes freedman. Regilla s brother charged Herodes with murder, but a Roman court (at the urging of Marcus Aurelius) acquitted him. Sarah Pomeroy s investigation suggests that despite Herodes erection of numerous monuments to his deceased wife, he was in fact guilty of the crime. A pioneer in the study of ancient women, Pomeroy gathers a broad, unique array of evidence, from political and family history to Greco-Roman writings and archaeology, to re-create the life and death of Regilla. Teasing out the tensions of class, gender, and ethnicity that gird this story of marriage and murder, Pomeroy exposes the intimate life and tragedy of an elite Roman couple. Part archaeological investigation, part historical re-creation, and part detective story,‎

‎Goddesses,Whores,Wives and Slaves : Women in Classical Antiquity‎

‎Sarah Pomeroy has consulted archaeological data, documents, historical writing, and the literature of the high civilization of Greece and Rome with minute attention. Her book is free of anachronistic speculation about what women must have felt, speculation projected back from our age to the past. She does not draw large conclusions or form sweeping generalizations, but the details she has gathered here speak for themselves and do not readily leave the mind. Included are photographs, endnotes, a bibliography, and an index. Wide ranging examination of the evidence for the various roles and perceptions of women in Greek and Roman society. 265p. plates.bibliography.index Book‎
