Stable Isotopic Analysis of the Mollusk Shells (Ioannis Liritzis, Androniki Drivaliari and Adamantios Sampson). ; Prehistory Monographs 31; Vol. 2; 395 pages; This book completes the two-part series that serves as the final report for the excavation of the Cave of the Cyclops on the island of Youra in the Northern Sporades of Greece, a site that was occasionally occupied from the Mesolithic through Roman period. The second volume contains the results of detailed studies on the archaeological material, organic remains, and archeometric analyses that complete the image of this significant archaeological site. These studies help to further distinguish the main characteristics of the Mesolithic culture in the Aegean basin, including: the intense exploitation of sea resources, limited hunting activities, the collection of native fruits and land snails to supplement the diet, and attempts at domestication by isolated island communities.

Theatre for Dreamers
1960. The world is dancing on the edge of revolution, and nowhere more so than on the Greek island of Hydra, where a circle of poets, painters and musicians live tangled lives, ruled by the writers Charmian Clift and George Johnston, troubled king and queen of bohemia. Forming within this circle is a triangle: its points the magnetic, destructive writer Axel Jensen, his dazzling wife Marianne Ihlen, and a young Canadian poet named Leonard Cohen. Into their midst arrives teenage Erica, with little more than a bundle of blank notebooks and her grief for her mother. Settling on the periphery of this circle, she watches, entranced and disquieted, as a paradise unravels.

PEISISTRATOS AND THE TYRANNY A Reappraisal of the Evidence
J. C. Gieben. Fine with no dust jacket. 2000. Softcover. 9050634168 . Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Publications of the Netherlands Institute at Athens; 0.5 x 9.25 x 6 Inches; 195 pages; The period when the tyrants dominated Athens is a very intriguing one. The historiographical evidence is of a late date and often of a puzzling nature. Connections between historiography and the archaeological evidence are not unproblematic. Is the traditional interpretation of the Peisistratids as sponsors of the arts sufficiently documented in our sources What was the nature of the resistance they met with What did the Athenian army look like in the second half of the sixth century What was the level of institutional organisation of the Athenian state in this period How does the tyranny compare to anthropological theory These are the questions addressed in this volume by a group of Dutch archaeologists and ancient historians. . ENVY AND JEALOUSY IN CLASSICAL ATHENS A Socio-Psychological Approach
Oxford University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 0199897727 . Emotions vary extensively between cultures especially in their eliciting conditions social acceptability forms of expression and co-extent of terminology. Envy and Jealousy in Classical Athens examines the sensation expression and literary representation of these major emotions in Athens. Previous scholarship has primarily taken a lexical approach focusing on usage of the Greek words phthonos and zlos. This has value but also limitations for two reasons: the discreditable nature of phthonos renders its ascription or disclamation suspect and there is no Classical Greek label for sexual jealousy. A complementary approach is therefore required one which reads the expressed values and actions of entire situations. Building on recent developments in reading emotion "scripts" in classical texts this book applies to Athenian culture and literature insights on the contexts conscious and subconscious motivations subjective manifestations and indicative behaviors of envy jealousy and related emotions. These critical insights are derived from modern philosophical psychological psychoanalytical sociological and anthropological scholarship thus enabling an exploration of both the explicit theorization and evaluation of envy and jealousy and also the more oblique ways in which they find expression across different genres-in particular philosophy oratory comedy and tragedy. By employing this new methodology Ed Sanders illuminates a significant and underexplored aspect of Classical Athenian culture and literature. ; Emotions of the Past; 224 pages .
