The Madaba Map dates to the 6th century AD and contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem. The author - Adolf Schulten (1870-1960) was an eminent German historian and archaeologist. ill., ril. «All'alba la Pizia si recava a fare il bagno nella sorgente Castalia, vicino al santuario. Una volta purificata, tornava al santuario, probabilmente accompagnata dal suo seguito, ed entrava nel tempio, dove bruciava ad Apollo un'offerta di foglie di alloro e farina d'orzo. Più o meno contemporaneamente, i sacerdoti del tempio dovevano verificare che potessero aver luogo le consultazioni. La procedura consisteva nell'aspergere di acqua fredda una capra, forse nel focolare sacro all'interno del tempio. Se la capra rabbrividiva, voleva dire che Apollo era lieto di essere interpellato». A Delfi arrivavano da ogni parte del Mediterraneo re, autorità cittadine e singoli individui, per consultare la Pizia, per erigere monumenti agli dei, per partecipare alle competizioni atletiche e musicali. La città, per lungo tempo, fu un concentrato di religione, arte, manovre politiche e ricchezze. Michael Scott racconta il più celebre oracolo dell'antichità e come una cittadina alle pendici del Parnaso sia diventata l'ombelico del mondo.
