Separated by thousands of miles of steppe, mountains and sea, these powerful states developed independently and with very limited awareness of each other's existence. This parallel process of state formation served as a massive natural experiment in social evolution that provides unique insight into the complexities of historical causation. Comparisons between the two empires shed new light on the factors that led to particular outcomes and help us understand similarities and differences in ancient state formation. The explicitly comparative perspective adopted in this volume opens up a dialogue between scholars from different areas of specialization, encouraging them to address big questions about the nature of imperial rule. In a series of interlocking case studies, leading experts of early China and the ancient Mediterranean explore the relationship between rulers and elite groups, the organization and funding of government, and the ways in which urban development reflected the interplay between state power and communal civic institutions. Heinrich Scherer, professore di matematica a Monaco di Baviera, era un gesuita devoto la cui opera sottolineava la gerarchia cattolica e la diffusione delle missioni gesuite in tutto il mondo. Following the publication of his findings from the spectacular excavations at Hisarlik the Turkish government revoked Schliemann's permission to dig and sued him for a share of the treasure trove Schlieman had uncovered. He was thus obliged to establish a new dig which he did at Mycenae in the Peloponnese and which was attended by similarly remarkable results culminating in the uncovering of the famous "Mask of Agamemnon". . Head and heel moderately worn with minor loss some white soiling on spine front hinge cracked internally otherwise unmarked tight and square. A lovely copy of this historically important publication. Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) was born in Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany) but was a world-traveler as a treasure hunter and pioneer archaeologist. An advocate of the historical reality of places mentioned in the works of Homer, he became the first important excavator of Troy and of the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. Schliemann brought dedication, enthusiasm, conviction a large fortune, and a great deal of luck to the work. His personal history is quite fascinating. At the Tiryns excavation he worked with Wilhelm Dorpfeld (1853-1940) a German architect, best known for his contributions to classical archaeology, and the wonderful drawings in this volume. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
