Il Medioevo francese ci ha lasciato circa centocinquanta di questi poemetti in rima baciata, generalmente di ottonari, lunghi poche centinaia di versi, e di contenuto per lo più erotico, se non francamente osceno. La scommessa che il curatore di questo volume (...) ha proposto all'amico direttore della collana, e di cui un editore coraggioso ha accettato di farsi complice, è di fingere che nell'epoca in cui viviamo nè le parole, né le cose facciano più paura, nemmeno nei titoli. 8vo, br. ed. 170pp. The Pyrrhic War attracted a great deal of attention in antiquity as the first contest between the burgeoning Roman Empire and the powers of the Hellenistic world. While blame for the initiation of hostilities fell squarely upon the polity of the Tarentines, scholars have long been wary of accounts relating how this conflict began. Three episodes set at Taras prove important for the construction both of Roman history and of narratives in antiquity. Approached as a case study of inventio in historiography, this monograph examines the aims and techniques of authors from Polybius to Zonaras in their depictions of the war's onset. No two of our sources offer the same version of events and new details emerge over the course of time. Analysis of the perception of injury, on the part of the Romans and the Tarentines, considers the implications of the æjust' war on the writing of history.

Jean-Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795) was a French writer who was especially interested in the classics and numismatics. He worked as the Keeper of the Royal Collection of Metals, and continued his post during the French Revolution. This, his most famous work, was first published in 1788. It tells a story of a young Scythian man, a descendant of the philosopher in the title, who tours Greece and writes about the customs and idiosyncrasies of each place he visits. It was considered a useful handbook for Greek classical studies, and helped students to real insights about early Greek culture.
