I tragici greci accreditano nei loro testi una serie di strutture di subordinazione, nell'ambito della famiglia come della società civile, qualificate inconfondibilmente, per la loro origine economica, come strutture ideologiche di classe. Secondo questa ideologia, nell’ambito dell'oikos la donna è subordinata all'uomo, il giovane all’anziano, il figlio al padre, lo schiavo al padrone; in quello della polis invece il povero è soggetto al ricco, il non nobile al nobile. In una democrazia autoritaria, quale si rivela quella attica, la tragedia assume la funzione di un vero e proprio «apparato ideologico di stato», destinato alla riproduzione della comunità e alla conservazione in essa dei rapporti di potere. Vittorio Citti (Bologna 1932) insegna Filologia Classica nell'Università di Venezia. Ha pubblicato un volume su Il linguaggio liturgico e religioso nelle tragedie di Eschilo e un saggio sulla tradizione manoscritta di Omero in età antica, oltre ad articoli su Omero, i tragici e la poesia ellenistica. Ha attualmente in preparazione un Index verborum della Anthologia Palatina, condotto in collaborazione tra le Università di Bologna e Venezia e il Birkbeck College di Londra.
