‎WALTER PATER‎

‎STUDI GRECI. A CURA DI PAOLA COLAIACOMO.‎

Collections of Essays are anthologies that have been compiled in order to demonstrate the works of a number of essayists. The list of essayists who have been active throughout the world and throughout time, is extraordinary. Descrizione bibliografica Titolo: Studi greci Titolo originale: Greek Studies. ‎Historiography and Identity I: Ancient and Early Christian Narratives of Community‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, vi + 322 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581576.‎

‎Summary The six-volume sub-series Historiography and Identity unites a wide variety of case studies from Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, from the Latin West to the emerging polities in Northern and Eastern Europe, and also incorporates a Eurasian perspective which includes the Islamic World and China. The series aims to develop a critical methodology that harnesses the potential of identity studies to enhance our understanding of the construction and impact of historiography. This first volume in the Historiography and Identity sub-series examines the many ways in which historiographical works shaped identities in ancient and medieval societies by focusing on the historians of ancient Greece and the late Roman Empire. It presents in-depth studies about how history writing could create a sense of community, thereby shedding light on the links between authorial strategies, processes of identification, and cultural memory. The contributions explore the importance of regional, ethnic, cultural, and imperial identities to the process of history writing, embedding the works in the changing political landscape. ‎The Wild Goose Chase‎

‎London: John Lane Bodley Head 1947 The Wild Goose Chase published in 1937 and Rex Warner's first novel was a groundbreaking piece of fiction. The novel follows three brothers whose journey is a dazzling original political allegory of liberation through Marxism. While most socialist writing of the 1930s took the form of social realism or reportage Warner broke with this tradition drawing instead on surrealism classical mythology fairy tales film and popular genres of the time including Boys Adventure and science fiction. Its publication immediately secured Rex Warner's reputation as a major writer. In the novel three brothers - Rudolph David and George - embark on a dangerous quest in search of the 'wild goose'. Their search takes them into a neighbouring country and they eventually arrive at a sealed-off town where the ruling dictators have enslaved the people and secured a life of privilege for themselves and a few harmless professors who teach at the town's university. Only George the youngest brother is able to stand up against the dictators and he eventually leads a successful revolution against them. Original vintage copy. Reprint. Hardcover.

‎Eternal Greece‎

‎London: Thames & Hudson 1957 "Ancient Greece was the fountainhead of Western civilization and the richness of the legacy handed down to later generations by the Hellenic world is without parallel. Today only weathered monuments some little more than ruins fragments of friezes and isolated sculptures remain to bear tangible witness to this once flourishing pre-Christian culture. But its spirit lives on: in the records of its poets dramatists and historians and in the very blood of its inheritors. Dr Hurlimann and Mr Warner by dint of a singularly happy collaboration have succeeded in bringing Ancient Greece once more before our eyes. The former has with his camera captured all the qualities that make up the perfection of Greek architecture; the milky clarity of the white Attic sunshine on marble the forlorn dignity of sacred grove and deserted amphitheatre the opalescent shimmer of Aegean bays. To complement these admirable pictures the author of Men and Gods and Greeks and Trojans gives us a lucid account of what he considers to be the salient features of Hellenic civilization incorporating a number of his own entirely new renderings from the works of Ancient Greek writers. Here is a feast for the eye and for the mind. No such authoritative yet readily assimilable record of 'the glory that was Greece' Large format survey of the most important archaeological sites in Greece printed in a large size type face and with marvellous photographs in B & W and colour.175p. illus. No such authoritative yet readily assimilable record of 'the glory that was Greece' . Large format survey of the most important archaeological sites in Greece printed in a large size type face and with marvellous photographs in B & W and colour.175p. illus. Today only weathered monuments some little more than ruins fragments of friezes and isolated sculptures remain to bear tangible witness to this once flourishing pre-Christian culture. But its spirit lives on: in the records of its poets dramatists and historians and in the very blood of its inheritors.
