‎"L'auteur a conçu le sujet d'une façon très ample et il l'a traité d'une allure rapide. Au lieu de s'enfermer dans la seule histoire d'Alexandre, il la relie à l'époque qui précède et à celle qui suit. Un premier chapitre trace le tableau du monde grec au IVe siècle jusqu'à Philippe ; un second résume le règne du fondateur de l'hégémonie macédonienne, marque l'influence des idées d'Isocrate sur lui et définit ce que fut, après Chéronée, le programme du généralissime à qui la Ligue corinthienne confia les destinées de l'Hellade. Entre le programme de Philippe et celui d'Alexandre, une différence s'aperçoit d'abord. Tandis que le père ne voit dans l'expédition vengeresse soigneusement préparée contre la Perse qu'un prétexte et un moyen pour réaliser la souveraine puissance de la Macédoine, le fils, au contraire, renverse les rôles. Son objectif, cessant d'être purement national et interne, vise l'établissement d'un ordre extérieur et cosmopolite. Il s'agit, tout en annexant les satrapies d'Asie et d'Afrique, de féconder la conquête à l'aide de cette culture grecque dont Aristote lui a inoculé l'intelligence et le goût (p. 58-59). Ainsi, la tâche poursuivie par le jeune Argéade, descendant et imitateur d'Achille, consiste tout ensemble dans l'agrandissement territorial de la Macédoine et dans la diffusion de la civilisation hellénique.
