The Philhellenes
London / Athens: Doric Publications 1977 "The efforts of the British philhellenes in the Greek War of Independence have never been forgotten by the Greeks. The British themselves however have been slow to honour their fellow-countrymen who fought for the first of the new nation states to achieve independence in the nineteenth century. In this account of the movement at home and in the field Mr. Woodhouse shows that it did not consist merely of Byron plus an entourage of eccentrics ruffian and romantics though there were plenty of all three. They were part of an international movement of protest in which nationalism religion radicalism and commercial greed all played a part as well as sentiment and pure heroism. Rhigas Velestinlis : The Proto-Martyr of the Greek Revolution
(New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) Rhigas of Velestino (1757-1798), popularly known as Rhigas Pheraios, is one of the greatest national heroes of modern Greece for it was he who some thirty years before the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 first conceived the possibility of a full-scale national revolution to free Greece from the domination of its Ottoman overlords. His aim was not simply an armed rebellion but a regeneration of his people, through education, literature and social and political awareness. To this end he wrote patriotic stories, poems, scientific lectures, he published maps and translations, and drafted a constitution, and he was the first Greek to insist that the popular language, or demotic Greek, should become the country's official language. But he was not to witness the realisation of his vision. On his way up to stir up the Greeks of the Mani he was betrayed, arrested in Trieste by the Austrian police, extradited to the Turkish authorities and executed, with seven colleagues, at Belgrade. This book is the first comprehensive study of Rhigas's life and ideas in English, and includes 14 black and white illustrations. Book

Wunderlich Hans Georg
Secret of Crete
New York: Macmillan. 1974 "Hans Wunderlich is a geologist who happened to be in Crete in 1970 when he took the opportunity of visiting Sir Arthur Evan's celebrated reconstruction of the so-called Palace of King Minos at Knossos - the legendary labyrinth where Theseus once defeated the dreaded Minotaur. This chance visit drew him into one of the greatest archaeological mysteries of all time for one contradiction struck him after another in the 'established' interpretations of the Minoan culture. His geologist's eye found clues that the early arcaeologists had missed the technical man asked questions to which no-one seemed to have the answer. He soon concluded that what he was gazing at was not a palace at all but something more sombre and perhaps even more significant. This book is the author's attempt to resolve the paradoxes that have obsessed the archaeological world ever since Evan's spectacular find." An interesting theory ."that the Palace of King Minos was not the bustling centre of gay courtly life but wasinstead a necropolis - a city of the dead "" 367p. illus. diagrs.maps.bibliography. index. Wunderlich Hans Georg
Secret of Crete
Athens: Efstathiadis. 1987 "Hans Wunderlich is a geologist who happened to be in Crete in 1970 when he took the opportunity of visiting Sir Arthur Evan's celebrated reconstruction of the so-called Palace of King Minos at Knossos - the legendary labyrinth where Theseus once defeated the dreaded Minotaur. This book is the author's attempt to resolve the paradoxes that have obsessed the archaeological world ever since Evan's spectacular find." An interesting theory ."that the Palace of King Minos was not the bustling centre of gay courtly life but wasinstead a necropolis - a city of the dead " 368p. illus.diagrs.maps.bibliography.index.
