Light Wear Fraying At Tips Small Repaired Chip At Lower Left Edge Of Spine Refurbished. Stendhal's Too Frank Travel Observations Scarce In This First English Translation. His Observations At Geneva Begin "The Prudery Of The Women At Geneva Is Incredible And Truly Ridiculous. I Have Observed That They Say Exactly The Same Thing To Every Stranger Presented To Them. To Repeat A Certain Formula Taught Them By Their Nurses. I Would Fain Know Who The Traveler Is That First Asserted There Was Such A Thing As Liberty In Switzerland. At Geneva And Berne There Are Four Hundred Surveillans. If You Offend Them Only By The Manner In Which Your Cravat Is Tied You Immediately Become An Object Of Their Persecution." Further Observations Made The Likelihood Of A Further English Translation Small Indeed: "Nothing Can Equal My Admiration Of The English Legislature Unless It Be The Repulsion I Feel From English Society. They Are The Most Unsocial Of Beings; Perhaps For That Reason The Least Happy. To Be Held In Consideration By An Englishman The Most Perfect Air Of Coldness Must Be Assumed."

Bible - New Testament - Greek; Baskerville. 1763.
HE KAINE DIATHEKE [Greek Title] = NOVUM TESTAMENTUM : JUXTA EXEMPLAR MILLIANUM. Typis Joannis Baskerville.
pp. [4], 415, [1]. Small age and damp stains to the first and last 40 leaves or so. Wide margined. Large 4to. 300mm. All edges gold gilt. Early plain full vellum binding. Marbled endpapers. Hand lettered ownership of: J.M Hicks, Winton, September 1910. Sole quarto printing of the Greek New Testament using Baskerville type (i.e., Greek type that Baskerville designed and cut himself). The text follows the 1707 edition by John Mill (1645-1707), with seven variations. This quarto edition was limited to 500 copies, and is much scarcer than the 8vo edition issued around the same time. Gaskell - Add. 1; Darlow & Moule 4755. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he became printer to Cambridge University. There he designed other fonts, including his remarkable Greek type. All of his books bear the marks of fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design.**PRICE JUST REDUCED! RARE. SAFE ADD 1

Bicheno, Hugh
Crescent and Cross: The Battle of Lepanto 1571
: "For much of the last fourteen hundred years the relationship between Christianity and Islam has been extremely troubled. Competition, misunderstanding and fanaticism led to frequent conflicts between those marching under the banners of the two religions, often ferocious in the extreme and studded with atrocities. Yet between these episodes - even at times in the midst of them - Muslims and Christians traded and associated with each other without any inherent animosity." "This book describes an event widely believed to herald the ultimate supremacy of western culture. On the morning of 7 October 1571, at the mouth of a gulf in western Greece, the fleets of the Muslim Ottoman Empire and the Roman Catholic Holy League collided in the last great battle ever to be fought between oared fighting ships. The Battle of Lepanto was the outstanding military event in a sixteenth century marked by constant warfare, and the greatest single battle ever fought between crescent and cross. Many believe that it changed the balance of power in the Mediterranean forever, and turned back a Muslim tide that threatened to engulf Europe." "However, as Hugh Bicheno shows here, the symbolic importance of Lepanto far outweighed its military significance. This timely book is the first major study of the battle ever written in English, and the first for many years in any language. It is enormous in scope, tracing the lines of history that came together at that time and place to explain why an event that barely affected the geopolitical balance in the Mediterranean is regularly counted among the decisive battles of history. Not least, as an illustration of the complex human reality behind an age-old conflict, the story is acutely relevant to the history we are living at present" 350p.illus (some col.) maps, tables, chronology, appendices, endnotes, bibliography. index. CHRONOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD
Spine is sunned. Scholar's name stamped to ffep (P. Stork). ; Absolute dates of events in ancient history have been difficult to calculate because of the complex adjustments and computations involved. The methods of relative dating developed by archaeologists and of direct dating established by modern science depend upon the interpretation of historical material which is virtually inaccessible. Using dates supplied by the ancients themselves, Bickerman suggests the means to convert them into units of our own dating system, thus providing an invaluable reference for all students of the ancient world. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman Life; 253 pages

Bickerman, Elias J.
The Jews in the Greek Age
One of our century's greatest authorities on the ancient world gives us here a vivid account of the Jewish people from the conquest of Palestine by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE to the revolt of the Maccabees. It is a rich story of Jewish social, economic, and intellectual life and of the relations between the Jewish community and the Hellenistic rulers and colonizers of Palestine?a historical narrative told with consummate skill.Elias Bickerman portrays Jewish life in the context of a broader picture of the Near East and traces the interaction between the Jewish and Greek worlds throughout this period. He reconstructs the evidence concerning social and political structures; the economy of Hellenistic Jerusalem and Judea; Greek officials, merchants, and entrepreneurs as well as full-scale Greek colonies in Palestine; the impact of Greek language and culture among Jews and the translation of Jewish Scriptures into Greek; Jewish literature, learning, and law; and the diaspora in the Hellenistic period. He deploys his profound knowledge gracefully, weaving archaeological finds, literary traditions, the political and economic record, and fertile insights into an abundant and lively history. This first full study of the pre-Maccabean interaction between the Greek and Jewish cultures will be welcomed by historians and specialists in Judaic studies. But any reader interested in the ancient Mediterranean world will find it to be filled with pleasures and discoveries.. 338p. / Book
