‎PERSIA AND THE WEST An Archaeological Investigation of the Genesis of Achaemenid Persian Art‎

‎Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; The first kings of the Achaemenid Persian empire, Cyrus the Great and Darius, sought to devise for their capital cities new styles in monumental architecture and sculpture to express their imperial status and mastery of the known world. With no local tradition to guide designers, a homogeneous style was created from the example of the many new subjects--Ionian Greeks, Lydians, Mesopotamians, and Egyptians. This book traces these sources and explores the way that traditional Achaemenid motifs, if not styles, also permeated the empire. The Achaemenid Persian experiment was unique in antiquity, and it was successful for as long as the empire lasted. Even after Alexander the Great brought about its downfall, it continued to influence the arts from Greece to India. This is a record of the brilliant flowering of an artificial yet unified construct, unmatched in the art of the Old World. ; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 255 pages‎

‎THE OXFORD HISTORY OF CLASSICAL ART‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book. DJ has minor shelfwear and creasing. ; 1.1 x 10.81 x 8.62 Inches; 444 pages; The art and architecture of Ancient Greece and Rome lies at the heart of the classical tradition of the Western world. Their legacy is so familiar as to have become commonplace. The legacy may appear simple, but the development of classical art in antiquity was complex and remarkably swift. It ran from near abstraction in 8th-century BC Greece, through years of observation and learning from the arts of the non-Greek world to the East and, in Egypt, to the brilliance of the classical revolution of the 5th century, which revealed attitudes and styles undreamt of by other cultures. After Alexander the Great, this became the art of an empire, readily learned by Rome and further developed according to the Romans' special character and needs until it provided the idiom for the imaging of Christianity. In this book, the story of this pageant of the arts is told by five leading scholars. Their aim has been to demonstrate how the arts served very different societies and patrons; the roles and objectives of the artists; the way in which the classical style was disseminated far beyond the borders of the Greek and Roman world; and the splendour and quality of the arts themselves.‎

‎Ethos e Varietas.

This book aims to point out the structure of the Ancient Greek ?harmoniai? by a thorough study on their inherent characters (?ethos?). Until now, scholars identified the ?harmoniai? with the Hellenistic concept of ?tonos? that implies a strict definition of form and matter, identity and difference, essence and accident. Nevertheless the history of ideas has shown us that such complex notions were unknown to Presocratic thought; likewise the ?tonoi? 509 gr. 280 p.‎

‎Canne.

‎Bocchiola Massimo (Autore), Marco Sartori (Autore) Con Un Saggio Di Siegmund Ginzberg‎

‎Pages uncut. Very light shelfwear. Else fine. ; Cyriac, or Ciriaco de' Pizzecolli (1391-1452) , was a merchant and diplomat from Ancona, a self-taught humanist and antiquarian. For many of the antiquities he described, and for most of the thousand Greek and Latin inscriptions he copied on voyages in Italy, Greece, the Mediterranean islands, and Asia Minor, his is the only surviving record. Bodnar gives this account of his name (page xx, n.1) : "Called Cyriacus in Latin, German, and sometimes in English; Cyriaque in French; and Ciriaco de' Pizzecolli in Italian. He usually signed himself as Kyriacus Anconitanus de Picenicollibus (abbreviated to K. A. P. ) or, occasionally in his later years, as Kuriakos ho ex Ankônos. ‎DEMOCRACY EMPIRE AND THE ARTS IN FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS‎

‎Harvard University Press. 1999. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Gift inscription from editors to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. Very minor shelfwear.; Athens in the fifth century B. C. Offers a striking picture: the first democracy in history; the first empire created and ruled by a Greek city; and a flourishing of learning philosophical thought and visual and performing arts so rich as to leave a remarkable heritage for Western civilization. To what extent were these three parallel developments interrelated An international group of fourteen scholars expert in different fields explores here the ways in which the fifth-century "cultural revolution" depended on Athenian democracy and the ways it was influenced by the fact that Athens was an imperial city. The authors bring to this analysis their individual areas of expertise--in the visual arts poetry and drama philosophy archaeology religion and social economic and political history--and a variety of theoretical approaches. The product of a colloquium at Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington D. C. Democracy Empire and the Arts in Fifth-Century Athens sheds new light on a much debated question that has wide implications. The book is illustrated and enriched by a comprehensive bibliography on the subject.; Center for Hellenic Studies Colloquia 2; 512 pages; Signed by Editors . 0674197690 .
