Gli eroi greci sono figure molto più complicate e sconcertanti di quanto l'accezione moderna della parola non lasci presagire: anzitutto vissero soltanto nella quarta era - convulsa e grandiosa - dell'umanità (dopo l'età d'oro, quella d'argento, quella di bronzo) e si estinsero subito dopo la guerra di Troia; in secondo luogo, erano esseri semidivini - e necessariamente mostruosi. L'argomento appassiona da secoli scrittori e studiosi. Ma per una volta non sarà azzardato definire fondamentale questo libro, imponente edificio che ancora oggi, a più di cinquant'anni dalla sua costruzione, si rivela un indispensabile punto d'osservazione, da cui lo sguardo può spaziare su un territorio sconfinato. Allievo di Karl Kerényi, Brelich ha scelto nel libro di percorrere una strada divergente da quella del maestro, e di procedere risolutamente verso una prospettiva storica e comparatistica. Muovendosi tra antropologia, etnologia, archeologia, storia e filologia, Brelich riesce così a estendere e al tempo stesso a rendere più nitido l'orizzonte d'indagine, e attraverso la sua magistrale analisi degli eroi greci - enigmatici nell'orizzonte culturale moderno, dove "c'è ancora posto per un'idea di dio, ma difficilmente per esseri 'semidivini'" - permette di cogliere in tutta la sua specificità il rapporto, in Grecia, fra rito e mito.

The Greek War of Independence 1821-1833.
"For the Greeks, the fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire was a cruel business, and its consequences far-reaching. Today's Greece is much more the child of that struggle than it is of the Classical period we know so much better. Because of Ottoman oppression and its brutal end, hostility to Turkey still smoulders, as does suspicion that foreign powers manipulate Greece for their own ends. For much of the war the Greek cause looked hopeless. The rebels could call only on lightly armed merchant ships and a long tradition of brigandage, which seemed no match for a formidable empire. Foreign philhellenes joined the Greek cause but foreign governments cared less for the Greeks than for the stability of Europe, hard-won by Napoleon's defeat. Nevertheless the Greeks won victories at sea, largely due to their use of terrifying fireships, and on land under the leadership of the charismatic Kolokotroms. Civil war then broke out among the Greeks, and for a time Kolokotroms swapped his tent for a prison cell. But support for Greece was growing, as all Europe was moved by Turkish massacres, by the death of Byron, most famous philhellene of all, and by the bloody invasion of the Peloponnese by Ottoman troops brought in by sea from Egypt. The governments of Europe now demanded an end to the fighting, and an allied fleet under Admiral Codrington sailed to meet the Ottoman navy at Navarino Bay. Nervous fingers fired inevitable shots, sixty Turkish ships were sent to the sea bed, and Greek freedom was finally assured. Inizialmente, progettando l'Appia, Roma si propose di difendere la «prima Italia», il versante tirrenico raccolto intorno all'Urbe. La Flaminia, via militaris per eccellenza, permise poi di tener separati i principali nemici, i Galli e i Sanniti, consentendo di disporre da mare a mare una fascia di territorio fedele alla res publica. Il libro racconta il contesto storico in cui maturò la battaglia (vale a dire la discesa in Italia dei Cartaginesi), analizza la composizione delle forze in campo, descrive lo svolgersi dello scontro e ne mette in luce le conseguenze sull'andamento della guerra. Ironia della sorte, per i Romani la sconfitta, e gli insegnamenti che ne trassero, prepararono la vittoria che, quattordici anni dopo, Scipione riportò sui Cartaginesi a Zama.

Il libro mostra come quella guerra sia in realtà l'episodio ultimo di una serie di eventi a sfondo sociale e civile che coinvolsero una «seconda» Italia a lungo emarginata. All'indomani di conflitti che avevano lasciato strascichi spaventosi di rovine, lutti, odio, Spartaco fu colui che, ultimo, riuscì a coagulare attorno a sé lo scontento delle popolazioni meridionali, soprattutto appenniniche, non ancora integrate. Anche se Crasso mise fine alla guerra, Roma, provata, fu infine costretta a cedere pienamente alle richieste degli Italici.

All’inizio, gli Arsacidi si erano rivolti con cautela verso Roma; ma ad imporli come suoi unici veri rivali fu la disfatta inflitta alle legioni sul campo di Carre (53 a.C.), i cui echi influenzarono a lungo le vicende del mondo antico. La situazione costrinse gli imperatori ad impiegare ogni mezzo, militare e politico, per garantire l’equilibrio. L’esito del duello rimase in bilico per oltre un secolo; e quando le sorti parvero pendere a favore di Roma, intervennero ad arrestarne la spinta le grandi rivolte degli Ebrei della Palestina e della Diaspora. Cadde infine, prostrata, la dinastia arsacide; solo però per essere sostituita da quella sasanide.
