br. "Per svago personale leggo la 'Storia della civiltà greca' di Burckhardt, che mi offre paralleli inaspettati". All'inizio del 1899, quando Sigmund Freud confidava le sue letture all'amico Wilhelm Fliess, il primo volume dell'opera era in libreria da qualche mese. Lo aveva dato alle stampe il filologo Jacob Oeri, nipote di Burckhardt e suo legatario, contravvenendo alle disposizioni testamentarie dello zio, che formulavano un esplicito divieto di pubblicazione. Le lezioni burckhardtiane di storia greca all'Università di Basilea, risalenti agli anni Settanta, erano entrate ormai nella leggenda; oltre agli studenti, vi furono ammessi solo pochissimi uditori. Tra gli esclusi, il giovane collega Friedrich Nietzsche, che era solito attendere Burckhardt all'uscita per farsi ricapitolare, sulla via di casa, i contenuti che non aveva potuto ascoltare poco prima. In quelle fervide conversazioni accadeva qualcosa di imparagonabile alla trasmissione di un sapere antiquario consolidato; prendeva forma un'idea di grecità che i classicisti avrebbero ritenuto del tutto spaesante, tanto era sprovvista dell'attributo di suprema armonia con cui generalmente la si qualificava. I due - il professore attempato e il filosofo che stava gettando scompiglio con 'La nascita della tragedia' -condividevano anche lo stile di incursione: il "vagare" in "modo curioso e selvaggio" nell'età remota dove "l'elemento umano si rivela senza maschera e privo di umanesimo".
