Text is in Greek with Latin translation on opposite page. Bound in full red morocco perhaps later 17th century with spine gilt in 6 compartments - rubbed chipped. Hinges and spine caps restored; careful repair to corner tips of front cover. All edges gilt. Pages contain minor scattered foxing and age toning. Inscription written in an old hand on verso of front blank. First printed edition of the "Excerpta Peiresciana" manuscript or "De Virtutuibus et Vitiis" part of a large Byzantine anthology of excerpts which were gathered from earlier Greek historical works and compiled under the direction of the emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus 905-959 c.e. The collection was arranged in 53 sections 4 of which are extant - 1. "De Legationibus" 2. "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" 3. "De Sententiis" 4. "De Insidiis." In 1582 Fulvius Ursini published "De Legationibus." Additions were later published by Hoeschel 1603. See Sandy's p.397. In 1634 Henri de Valesius Valois1603-1676 a respected Greek scholar and translator published "De Virtutibus et Vitiis" here listed from a Cyprus manuscript in the possession of M. Peiresc Excerpta Peiresciana. The excerpts include selections from Polybius Diodorus Siculus Nicolas Damascene Dionysius Halicarnassus Appianus and John of Antioch. The excerpts from Polybius's "History" are considered to be the most important as they form an integral part of what we know about the fragmentary sections of this work. 8vo, br. ed. 251pp. Although numerous scholars have studied Late Republican humor, this is the first book to examine its social and political context. Anthony Corbeill maintains that political abuse exercised real powers of persuasion over Roman audiences and he demonstrates how public humor both creates and enforces a society's norms. Previous scholarship has offered two explanations for why abusive language proliferated in Roman oratory. The first asserts that public rhetoric, filled with extravagant lies, was unconstrained by strictures of propriety. The second contends that invective represents an artifice borrowed from the Greeks. After a fresh reading of all extant literary works from the period, Corbeill concludes that the topics exploited in political invective arise from biases already present in Roman society. The author assesses evidence outside political discourseâ?"from prayer ritual to philosophical speculation to physiognomic textsâ?"in order to locate independently the biases in Roman society that enabled an orator's jokes to persuade. Within each instance of abusive humorâ?"a name pun, for example, or the mockery of a physical deformityâ?"resided values and preconceptions that were essential to the way a Roman citizen of the Late Republic defined himself in relation to his community. Originally published in 1996. In-8°, pp. 8 (da p. 333 a p. 340) con 1 CARTINA GEOLOGICA apiena pagina e un profilo (sezione) geologico della costa in bianco e nero. Nella primavera del 1912 durante la guerra italo-turca culminata nell'occupazione della Libia, l'Italia pensò di affrettare la fine della guerra occupando 12 isole vicine alla Turchia (tra cui LERO e Rodi), governate dall'Italia fino al maggio 1945 (ma Lero a metà novembre era stata occupata a forza dai tedeschi che deportarono gli italiani rimasti)

Due volumi in un tomo (12x19 cm) di XXIII-222 e 219-(4) pagine. Bella legatura coeva in mezza pergamena a punte, tassello di titolo rosso al dorso. Ottime condizioni. Un classico della storiografia.
