SIREN FEASTS A History of Food and Gastronomy in Greece
Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). Else very faint shelfwear. ; 0.92 x 9.18 x 6.11 Inches; 320 pages; Cheese, wine, honey and olive oil--four of Greece's best known contributions to culinary culture- -were already well known four thousand years ago. Remains of honeycombs and of cheeses have been found under the volcanic ash of the Santorini eruption of 1627 BC. Over the millennia, Greek food diversified and absorbed neighboring traditions, yet retained its own distinctive character. In Siren Feasts, Andrew Dalby provides the first serious social history of Greek food. He begins with the tunny fishers of the neolithic age, and traces the story through the repertoire of classical Greece, the reputations of Lydia for luxury and of Sicily and South Italy for sybaritism, to the Imperial synthesis of varying traditions, with a look forward to the Byzantine cuisine and the development of the modern Greek menu. The apples of the Hesperides turn out to be lemons, and great favour attaches to Byzantine biscuits. Fully documented and comprehensively illustrated, scholarly yet immensely readable, Siren Feasts demonstrates the social construction placed upon different types of food at different periods (was fish a luxury item in classical Athens, though disdained by Homeric heroes? ). It places diet in an economic and agricultural context; and it provides a history of mentalities in relation to a subject which no human being can ignore.

MODERN GREEK POETRY [INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR]

Dalvens especial [sic] interest was in the history of the Jews in Greece, particularly the northern Ioannina community, who traced their ancestry to the ancient Palestinians (c300 BC) and had retianed their own customs and religious liturgy. She edited the academic journal the Sephardic Scholar and served as president of the American Society of Sephardic Studies (abitofhistory, 2018) . The present work is a comprehensive collection of all the most important Greek poets from 1751 to the 1940s. Mark Van Doren calls these English translations "natural and alive. Cannae: The Experience of Battle in the Second Punic War
8vo, br. ed. On a hot and dusty summer s day in 216 BC, the forces of the Carthaginian general Hannibal faced the Roman army in a dramatic encounter at Cannae. Massively outnumbered, the Carthaginians nevertheless won an astonishing victory - one that left more than 50,000 men dead. Gregory Daly s enthralling study considers the reasons that led the two armies to the field of battle, and why each followed the course that they did when they got there. It explores in detail the composition of the armies, and the tactics and leadership methods of the opposing generals. Finally, by focusing on the experiences of those who fought, Daly gives an unparalleled portrait of the true horror and chaos of ancient warfare. This striking and vivid account is the fullest yet

La Battaglia Di Canne
8vo, br. ed. pp.322. pp. 290, cm 14x21. (Le Guerre. 52).

DANFORTH LORING M.; TSIARAS ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY
The Death Rituals Of Rural Greece
Princeton University Press Princeton: 1982. Softcover. Brand new book. This compelling text and dramatic photographic essay convey the emotional power of the death rituals of a small Greek village--the funeral the singing of laments the distribution of food the daily visits to the graves and especially the rite of exhumation. These rituals help Greek villagers face the universal paradox of mourning: how can the living sustain relationships with the dead and at the same time bring them to an end in order to continue to live meaningfully as members of a community That is the villagers' dilemma and our own. Thirty-one moving photographs reproduced in duotone to do justice to their great beauty combine with vivid descriptions of the bereaved women of "Potamia" and with the words of the funeral laments to allow the reader an unusual emotional identification with the people of rural Greece as they struggle to integrate the experience of death into their daily lives. Loring M. Danforth's sensitive use of symbolic and structural analysis complements his discussion of the social context in which these rituals occur. He explores important themes in rural Greek life such as the position of women patterns of reciprocity and obligation and the nature of social relations within the family. ISBN: 0691000271. DAPPER Olfert
Valetta Civitas Nova Maltae & Melita Insula vulgo Malta
Rare. Magnificent bird's-eye plan of the harbor and city of Valletta seen from the northwest. Beautifully engraved with a unique pictorial title cartouche, ships, a coat of arms and a decorative key locating 46 sites within the city. Uncoloured; fine dark impression, short section of guard missing and this has caused a slight thinning of paper on verso, otherwise superb condition. A finely engraved plan of the island, with highly decorative figured cartouche and various sailing vessels in the sea area. From the German translation of the works of Montanus. These maps are usually included in Dapper’s Naukeurige beschryving der Eilanden, in de Archipel der Middelantische Zee and their peculiar characteristic is that they were joined together in the past. Copper engraving, in excellent condition. Rare.
