Blood of the Provinces: The Roman Auxilia and the Making of Provincial Society from Augustus to the Severans
8vo, br. ed. pp.xviii-430. the first fully comprehensive study of the largest part of the Roman army, the auxilia. This non-citizen force constituted more than half of Rome s celebrated armies and was often the military presence in some of its territories. Diverse in origins, character, and culture, they played an essential role in building the empire, sustaining the unequal peace celebrated as the pax Romana, and enacting the emperor s writ. Drawing upon the latest historical and archaeological research to examine recruitment, belief, daily routine, language, tactics, and dress, this volume offers an examination of the Empire and its soldiers in a radical new way. Blood of the Provinces demonstrates how the Roman state addressed a crucial and enduring challenge both on and off the battlefield - retaining control of the miscellaneous auxiliaries upon whom its very existence depended. Crucially, this was not simply achieved by pay and punishment, but also by a very particular set of cultural attributes that characterized provincial society under the Roman Empire. Focusing on the soldiers themselves, and encompassing the disparate military communities of which they were a part, it offers a vital source of information on how individuals and communities were incorporated into provincial society under the Empire, and how the character of that society evolved as a result.

Hazzard, RA R A
IMAGINATION OF A MONARCHY; Studies in Ptolemaic Propaganda
University of Toronto Press. 2000. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very slight shelfwear else Fine.; Phoenix Supplementary Volume; 300 pages; Scholars have long known that the Egyptian Ptolemaic monarchy underwent a transformation between 323 and 30 BC. The queens of that dynasty started as subordinates of the kings but ended as their superiors. Exactly when and how this change occurred has proven problematic for modern scholars. R. A. Hazzard argues that this change was put in motion by Ptolemy II who glorified his sister ArsinoT and made acceptable a civilian style of kingship based on piety towards his real and mythical ancestors. Ptolemy's support and elevation of his sister inspired the queens of the line to assert themselves at the expense of their male associates. The process culminated in the absolute rule of Kleopatra VII after 47 BC. Hazzard presents a clear argument based on the numismatic epigraphical papyrological literary and historical sources. . 0802043135 . University of Toronto Press hardcover

Else minor shelfwear.; Skrifter Utgivna Av Svenska Institutet I Athen / Acta Instituti Atheniensis Regni Sueciae Series in 4° XXXVIII; 303 pages; The purpose of the Fifth International Symposium at the Swedish Institute at Athens the papers and discussions of which are contained in this volume was to initiate a discussion of the various phenomena characteristic of Greek cult practice of the pre-Hellenistic periods ranging from sacrifice and libations to the handling of cult images and the placing of votive gifts in a sanctuary. It was planned as a cross-discipline symposium so as to allow the problems to be addressed by scholars from diverging points of view by diverse methods and on the basis of the available evidence be it archaeological architectural iconographical literary or epigraphical. We also invited an anthropologist Professor W. Arens of the State University of New York at Stony Brook in order to put Greek cult practice in the more general perspective of cultural anthropology. These efforts notwithstanding it proved impossible to even touch upon all relevant aspects of the topic within the limited time of three days of sessions and a one day field-trip. The result was a concentration of papers and discussions on a few central phenomena such as animal sacrifice votive offerings and ritual meals and a number of single contributions dealing with a wide range of other aspects. It is our hope that the proceedings will inspire further research in this fascinating field. Robin Hägg . 9185086975 . Paul Aströms Förlag paperback

Heckel, Waldemar
THE MARSHALS OF ALEXANDER'S EMPIRE
Minor scuffing. Adhesive stains to inner covers. ; The successors of Alexander the Great were neither his closest friends nor his most prominent generals. But because these marshals labored in his shadow, their careers and contributions to Alexander's success have been neglected by historians, ancient and modern. The primary aim of this book is to bring them to light. Waldemar Heckel presents an interpretative prosopographical study of more than 130 officers who served Alexander the Great. As such, The Marshals of Alexander's Empire is a revision, a continuation and an expansion of H. Berve's Das Alexanderreich aup prosopographischer Grunlage, volume 2 (Munich, 1926). The Marshals of Alexander's Empire provides the first full discussion in English of the careers of Alexander's Macedonian officers and closest friends. ; 1.2 x 9.3 x 6.1 Inches; 444 pages

Hedrick, Charles
Ancient History: Monuments And Documents
If students are to "do" history, as opposed to "reading" it, they must learn how to engage with historical sources. This book introduces students to the chief disciplines, methods, and sources employed in "doing" ancient history. It gives them a sense of the nature of evidence and its use in the reconstruction of the past, helping them to read a historical narrative with more critical appreciation; and it encourages them to consider the differences between their own academic experience of ancient sources books, inscriptions, coins, and the like and the use of these same objects within the everyday life of ancient society. The author writes clearly, concisely, and concretely, invoking ancient illustrations and modern parallels as appropriate.174p. bubliographies , index. A few and underlinings through to page 21, then pages 22- 174 are fine! Book

These range from present-day Toronto to the nineteenth-century high Arctic, from the Greek Islands to Kathmandu, from a tunnel under Vimy Ridge in 1915 where a Canadian sentry hears his enemy singing through the wall, to a tourist town in the Rockies where a painter and her dying husband make love for the last time.
