JONCHERAY Jean-Pierre

Escape to Nowhere.
8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece and 3 plates of maps in red and black, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper, rear endpapers lightly spotted; cloth, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in price-clipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly frayed at extremities. Striking wrapper artwork by Ley Kenyon (illustrator of Brickhill's 'The Great Escape). Captured in Greece during the evacuation, Driver Francis Jones spent the remainder of the war in a series of escape attempts covering Greece, the Greek Islands, Italy and Germany. A lone escaper with no 'X' or escape committee for support, his experiences against impossible odds makes an 'other ranks' escape story with a difference.

THE ROMAN WORLD OF DIO CHRYSOSTOM
Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Additional plate of inner cover ("With the compliments of the author. Sent by Harvard University Press..." ). Light Foxing to top of textblock. DJ spine sunned. Light edgewear. ; Loeb Classical Monographs; 0.39 x 9.06 x 5.91 Inches; 216 pages; The Greek orator Dio Chrysostom is a colorful figure, and along with Plutarch one of the major sources of information about Greek civilization during the early Roman Empire. C. P. Jones offers here the first full-length portrait of Dio in English and, at the same time, a view of life in cities such as Alexandria, Tarsus, and Rhodes in the first centuries of our era. Skillfully combining literary and historical evidence, Mr. Jones describes Dio's birthplace, education, and early career. He examines the civic speeches for what they reveal about Dio's life and art, as well as the life, thought, and language of Greek cities in this period. From these and other works he reinterprets Dio's attitude toward the emperors and Rome. The account is as lucid and pleasantly written as it is carefully documented.

AFTER THE PAST Essays in Ancient History in Honour of H. W. Pleket
Small bump to foreedge of front cover. Faint bump to base of spine. ; Mnemosyne , Vol Suppl. 233; 378 pages; What was funny about ancient jokes, and why? Why did the Roman state legislate to curb the behaviour of its obscenely rich and powerful elite, if it never really expected such laws to be obeyed? Why did it oppress the poor, and lavish public child support on them? These are important questions, but ancient Greeks and Romans could never have thought of them. They never questioned the right of the rich to be rich. They could not improve their understanding of Homeric gift-giving with the experience of ritualized friendship among the Trobriand islanders. Such questions and such answers can only come from those who live after the ancient past. This volume honours the well-known Dutch epigraphist and ancient historian H. W. Pleket. Ten substantial essays reflect his wide range, from early Greece to the Roman Empire, and his taste for comparative economic and social history.
