Hans Beck (ed.), Griet Vankeerberghen
Rulers and Ruled in Ancient Greece, Rome, and China
8vo, hardcover, 448pp. Situated on opposite flanks of Eurasia, ancient Mediterranean and Han-Chinese societies had a hazy understanding of each other's existence. But they had no grounded knowledge about one another, nor was there any form of direct interaction. In other words, their historical trajectories were independent. In recent years, however, many similarities between both cultures have been detected, which has energized the field of comparative history. The present volume adds to the debate a creative method of juxtaposing historical societies. Each contribution covers both ancient China and the Mediterranean in an accessible manner. Embarking from the observation that Greek, Roman, and Han-Chinese societies were governed by comparable features, the contributors to this volume explain the dynamic interplay between political rulers and the ruled masses in their culture specific manifestation as demos (Greece), populus (Rome) and min (China).

THE ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY IN THE AGE OF DEMOSTHENES Structure Principles and Ideology
Blackwell Publishers. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0631180176 . Very Minor shelfwear. ; The Ancient World; 410 pages; When democratic rule was ended by the conquering Macedonians in 322 the Athenians had evolved principles and practice of democratic ideology that became the direct inspiration of those liberal ideas cherished by the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mogens Hansen examines Athenian democracy both as a political system and as an ideology. In describing the former he distinguished between the three major decision-making organs - the Assembly the Legislators and the Peoples Courts and the magistrates who were responsible both for preparing the agenda for the legislature and for carrying its decisions into effect. In discussing Athenian democratic ideology Dr Hansen also makes the important distinction between the ideals held by the democrats themselves and those imputed to them by the critics of democracy principally and ironically given that they would barely have survived under any other system the philosophers. The Athenians conceived liberty both as the ability to participate in the decision-making process and as the right to live without oppression from the state or other citizens. Equality was conceived not as an equality of nature but as an equality of opportunity. "The Athenian Democracy in the Age of Demosthenes" is based on more than 30 years sustained research. . Hanson Victor Davis; John Keegan Intro.
THE WESTERN WAY OF WAR Infantry Battle in Classical Greece
Oxford University Press. Very Good. 1989. Softcover. 0195065883 . Scholar's name to half-title Robert Brown. Pages tanned. Foxing to top of textblock. ; 244 pages; Second Edition. The Greeks of the classical age invented not only the central idea of Western politics--that the power of state should be guided by a majority of its citizens--but also the central act of Western warfare the decisive infantry battle. Instead of ambush skirmish maneuver or combat between individual heroes the Greeks of the fifth century b. C. Devised a ferocious brief and destructive head-on clash between armed men of all ages. In this bold original study Victor Davis Hanson shows how this brutal enterprise was dedicated to the same outcome as consensual government--an unequivocal instant resolution to dispute. The Western Way of War draws from an extraordinary range of sources--Greek poetry drama and vase painting as well as historical records--to describe what actually took place on the battlefield. It is the first study to explore the actual mechanics of classical Greek battle from the vantage point of the infantryman--the brutal spear-thrusting the difficulty of fighting in heavy bronze armor which made it hard to see hear and move and the fear. Hanson also discusses the physical condition and age of the men weaponry wounds and morale. This compelling account of what happened on the killing fields of the ancient Greeks ultimately shows that their style of armament and battle was contrived to minimize time and life lost by making the battle experience as decisive and appalling as possible. Linking this new style of fighting to the rise of constitutional government Hanson raises new issues and questions old assumptions about the history of war. . Oxford University Press paperback
