Tale penetrazione è testimoniata dall'ingente quantità di ceramica micenea importata che si ritrova nei centri costieri dell'Italia centro-meridionale e della Sicilia. Dopo la morte di Pericle e durante la guerra del Peloponneso, i conflitti crebbero d'intensità fino a provocare un cambio di regime. L'oligarchia della fine del V secolo non è una parentesi nella storia ateniese, ma un episodio importante per comprendere il significato delle vicende politiche della città attica dalla fondazione della democrazia nel 508 fino alla restaurazione di un regime popolare nel 403.‎
