‎Sous le pseudonyme d'Alain de Penennrun se cache un jeune et brillant officier de l'armée française, qui était correspondant de guerre auprès de l'armée serbe. Doué d'un remarquable talent d'observation secondé par une plume des plus alertes, il écrivit au jour le jour ses souvenirs et ses impressions. Le premier chapitre est consacré à l'étude de l'origine du conflit qui mit simultanément aux prises la Bulgarie avec la totalité des forces des autres nations balkaniques. Les chapitres II et III sont des notes de voyage (passage à Belgrade, puis à Uskub, arrivée au quartier général du prince Alexandre de Serbie). Le chapitre IV est une étude technique de la bataille de la Bregalnitza. Les chapitres V à VII sont consacrés aux combats d'Egri-Palanka, à l'arrêt des opérations, aux négociations de Bucarest, et à une tournée rapide au milieu des troupes roumaines. Le chapitre VIII contient des remarques personnelles sur les opérations de la deuxième guerre balkanique, une brève comparaison des quatre armées principales des Balkans, et une étude rapide de la situation politique telle qu'ell paraît résulter du traité signé à Bucarest le 10 août 1913.‎
